What about a school counselor?

If your mother refuses to pay for one she is being neglectful and that is against child protection laws.

If you are in school, you can go to the counselor at school. A psychiatrist is for people with major mental disorders, usually requiring medication to cope. I doubt you need that.

Ask yourself some of these questions; when did the depression start, what was going on at the time, do you have the symptoms of clinical depression or is it situational depression?

Sit down and write about what you are feeling, don't hold back. This will help you to feel better, to a certain extent, and you will have a clearer picture about what is bothering you.

If you are a teenager, your hormones are going crazy and that has an affect on your brain chemistry. I suggest you take a good look at the following; your diet, what do you eat? Is it healthy or junk? That makes a big difference. Sugar and foods with lots of chemicals all have an affect on your body. Do you do drugs or alcohol? Those have a major impact on your brain chemistry and alcohol and many drugs are depressants.

Take care of yourself, do what is best for you, talk to someone at school that can help.

Most states have mental health services at little or no cost-check online or in the phone book under the blue government pages most likely under the health and human services. Please get help. You can talk to your school counselor or a religious leader.

You can also call the Boys Town National Hotline for free and talk to counselors.

Girls and Boys Town National Hotline
Call With any Problem, Anytime
1-800-448-3000 (TDD 1-800-448-1833)
Open 24 hours a day, everyday

The Girls and Boys Town National Hotline is a 24-hour crisis, resource and referral line. Trained counselors can respond to your questions every day of the week, 365 days a year. In 2005, more than 410,000 children and families were helped through the Girls and Boys Town national hotline, and over the past decade, more than 7 million callers have found help at the end of the line.

look in the phone book (or use the internet) to see if there is a Community Mental Health Clinic. These places will see you for free for a first consultation and their fees are usually on a sliding scale depending on how much money you make. If you don't make any money it might be free.

It would probably be for a limited time, like a few months, but that might be enough to make a difference.

I don't know your age, but if you are in school, your school councilor or nurse or health teacher should be able to point you in the right direction. That is their job and they will keep it confidential so don't feel bad about asking them.

Not any good ones (at least that I'm aware of). But seeing that you are a minor (or at least I assume so), there are other community-based help groups that you can go to-- try checking the yellow pages for help lines or groups. Do you have health insurance? If so, the best thing to do is to see your primary doc and get a referral. If not, contact Planned Parenthood (or somewhere similar) and ask them for direction. Whether you are male or female, they have some really good network associations and can point you in the right direction. If you don't like that idea, I'd recommend contacting your local hospital or going in to their psych area-- there are often flyers for groups that are meeting. Good luck!

If you have health insurance, it should cover some of it but I've never heard of free clinics. When you're young, you go through a lot of hard times and it might work just to try to keep yourself busy and get involved in some more stuff at school. If it turns out you can't see a psychiatrist, just try to remember that you have your whole life ahead of you and try to find some new things that interest you.

Contact your local mental health association; they can refer you to free/low-cost clinics. If you have a university in your area that has a psychology department, check with them; their master's and PhD candidates have to do a certain amount of clinical work, and they often have a sliding-scale clinic. Likewise, if there is a medical school near you, they often have a similar facility. It's hard to do things when you're depressed, so I applaud you for taking a step to help yourself even when your mother doesn't quite understand.

I'm not sure how old you are, but if you're still in school, speak to your guidance counselor. Many schools have a list of places which offer free or reduced cost help for families. If you are in college, many colleges offer help through the student health centers on campus.

You can also check out this website, which will provide some direction on how to locate mental health services for your situation:

Hope this helps! :)

Try checking with your local health department of DHHR. If they can't lead you in the right direction, contact your local United Way. They offer therapy and counseling services through a program called Family Services and it is based upon your income. If it is determined that you need to see a psychiatrist and be put on medicaiton, they will find you one to suit your needs and that doctor will also be based on your income. Good luck to you.
