Wow! "For the money" really is a factor in this question.

Without a moment's hesitation, I will tell you that the Nikon D50 is head and shoulders above the Fuji S5200.

The sensor is over EIGHTEEN TIME LARGER in the Nikon. This translates into image quality at all levels.

The Nikon allows you to choose and use any one of literally hundreds of lenses made by Nikon and other lens manufacturers. The Fuji has a fixed lens and that's your only choice - now and forever. At f/3.2-8 it's not a very fast lens at that.

The on-camera flash on the Nikon is good for about 3 times the distance as the Fuji.

I guess the Fuji has a video mode and the Nikon does not, but no DSLR that I know of has a video mode.

Okay, there is no doubt that the Nikon is a better camera that will give you better pictures with no shutter lag (probably present on the Fuji) while allowing you to choose any lens you need for a given situation.

By the time you buy the Nikon body and even a kit lens, it will cost you over $600. The Fuji is half that much. I always say to make a list of the cameras according to their most desirable features and then, starting at the top of the list, buy the first one you come to that you can afford. Your list only has two cameras on it. One costs twice as much as the other, but is arguably worth well more than twice as much - if you can afford it.
