If they could show proof that you had not been in contact with the child the court probably could.
but remember one does not need to be adopted for a legal name change to take place.

Yes it can be done if you did not have contact with your son for over a year, the custodial parent can file a petition for adoption on grounds of abandonment. They can publish a public notice in the paper if they did not know your current whereabouts and have the adoption go through. Stepparent adoptions are the most common form of adoption in the US

YES. January 19th, 1971- my oldest son was sold by a Dr., a lawyer, against my will I found out later my hospital room was monitered by nursing staff to prevent visitors entering;& a sign on door also stated 'no visitors'.-Dr. told my mother I did not want to see her-which was not true. They wanted me to sign papers before I even came out of anesthesia completely-that was the first thing I remember waking up ...The dr. told me later he sewed me up tight as a virgin-so I was good as new. Ihad turned 16 two weeks earlier on Jan.5th. My stepfather prevented anything my mother may have done to help me...& it feels like it just happened. I hope that little boy is okay & knows he was loved & wanted.

If the court cut parental rights, then it can happen.

But the court will not cut parental rights unless it is some EXTREME situation. And I mean extreme.
