It is great to serve the best you can.
However, it is an error to make it your god. It can be a very sublte and deceptive thing.
When pride is inappropriate, it becomes something that causes you to forget God's place, to show yourself better than others, or to prove your value, and it can start to cause trouble.
There are many verses that show the destructiveness of inappropriate pride.
Do a search for 'pride' on http://bible.crosswalk.com and you will see many examples.
There are also some verses where pride is used in a positive sense.

Having some pride makes you have a more positive outlook on life, it makes you happy, you are more inclined to achieve greater success for the common good of all... that is not a sin! Perhaps they are mistaken pride to the level of selfishness and greed. Pride is no sin, it's what you do with it that can make it a sin or not.
And I imagine these thumbs down come from my fellow Christians... did you skip the part where God said only he can pass judgement? Having a little pride in yourself is not harmful but being so critical of others that have not hurt you is.

Pride has two meanings. One is being content, that is, satisfied, with what you have done. This is not sinful.
The other is more of a boasting, thinking that we deserve glory and rewards for what we have done. That is self-righteousness.
If you want to give yourself a pat on the back for good grades that is fine, but if you think God will let you into heaven because you get good grades, that is self-righteousness.

The problem (like many) is in the translation.
In Hebrew, there are 11 different words for pride, but in English, there is only one, so all of those 11 different words for pride get grossly summed into our one definition.
The kind of pride that is considered sinful is when you are so confident in yourself, you feel that you are no longer in need of God. In Christianity, God comes before everything, and the kind of pride that is sinful, is when you put yourself before God.

Are you truly PROUD of your grades, or PLEASED with them? God said of Jesus "with him I am well pleased."
He did not state that he was Proud.
"Proud" is something we must frequently apologize for (i.e."you must understand your uncle, he is such a proud man").
I might say that being PLEASED or taking PLEASURE from accomplishments is less likely to make one defensive - and therefore, the person will be more agreeable to his/her neighbors.
I work in customer sevice and have found that I take some PRIDE in that position. When once met with an unexpected managerial rebuke, I responded somewhat harshly (push came to shove - I got fired). Had I merely taken PLEASURE in my position (which I honestly did do well) I would have been much less defensive about my performance.
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.

Just be careful.
18 Pride [goeth] before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
19 Better [it is to be] of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

It is only when it gets out of balance, it is considered "wrong". It's not a sin to eat for nourishment, but gluttony is considered a sin. It's the same with pride. You have to have a certain amount of pride in your appearance so that you don't walk around filthy and as a slob, but it can escalate to the level of conceit and then it is wrong. Get the idea? Nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments so long as you don't become braggadocios!

It is not that kind of pride that is looked down upon by God, but rather the kind of pride where you say "Hmph, I'm better than you". Looking down on someone just because God favored you with riches, looks, intelligence etc is what is looked down on. Instead you should be compassionate to people less fortunate and you should thank the Lord for blessing you.
