Yes I have been to Belize only once. It was naturally beautiful without a doubt but the poverty was emotionally crushing. The cayes offshore are beautiful and the diving is exceptional. The Belize Zoo is also quite nice!

been to belize three times. love it. san ignacio is a great place to explore mayan ruins and the jungle. definitely go to the cayes to explore the awesome sealife.
You do not need to get shots like someone else told you. Just make sure to get out of Belize city as soon as you can. Yes, there is poverty. But when you go to the smaller villages you see the kids are happy. They are not spoiled brats like our kids in the U.S., They our happy playing with a soccer ball, swimming or the simple things.
Kind of a breath of fresh air seeing that. Kids are not fat and lazy like a lot of U.S. kids are now. No fast food,
What a concept!!!! Just good cooking, Fresh Fish,Best tasting fruit & veggies, Lobster, and rice and beans. Oh yeah dont forget about the Beliken Beers.
Where else can you find a cabana sitting over the reef
watching Sharks,Ray's,Octopuss, and all sorts of amazing
creatures while you sit above them smoking a joint for
$250 for a week. If you want to go inland Caracol is one amazing ruin. Makes you def. wonder about the Mayan civilization and how it ended so fast.Belize is Def. not a place you want to go just stopping by for a day or two on a cruise. Need to spend time with the people, they are what makes Belize so special. Very kind and helpful, not the busy rudeness you see nowadays here at home. People actually smile and say hi to you. We could learn a lot from a 3 world country.

I was just in Belize for a day as a stop on a cruise. It was a beautiful country. It was evident that it is a very poor country as well. Our tour guide took us through the "rich"area of Belize City and it looked like an American slum. It really opens your eyes and makes you count your blessings.
Once you get out of Belize City, it's extremely rural. It's so interesting. I felt like i was in Kansas in the 1930's (Wizard of Oz era) It's so untouched!
Supposedly they have the second largest barrier reef next to Australia. I went cave tubing rather than snorkeling so I didn't have the pleasure of experiencing it.
Another sort of sad thing that our tour guide told us is that most f the beaches are private so the native people of Belize City don't really even get to experience the beach.
You may have to get malaria and hepititis vaccinations before you go as well. It's really a great place and they are pushing hard to get their profiled raised to attract tourists.
Go there now, before it's taken over by the corporate chain resorts.
Another really nice place we stopped on our cruise was Isla Roatan in Honduras. That place was virtually untouched by tourists, but it's becomming more and more built up each year. It was fantastic.
