On the whole I agree with you.

As with people from many countries, there are good and bad, but I feel the Americans look after each other, and show a caring attitude towards strangers.
Lots of people tend to look on Americans as they do their President, and I think this gives the down to earth American a bad name.

They are just like you and me, living in hard times, and trying to get on with life.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give them 9.5.

We're not exactly a race. We're merely a nationality. That set aside, we definitely are not the friendliest of people. Try working in a retail center here for awhile and you'll realize half the idiots we talk to. The only reason we act nice is to make ourselves look good when we provide a service but once the customer is gone, we speak of their true idiocy and why they bothered us. We're more of "behind the scenes". You won't know a true American until you've been over here for awhile. Im sure it's the same in most other countries.

I'm an American. I love my country. It is mixed not only with people of all nationalities but also those who practice good manners and those that don't. I will have to be honest and say that it has been my experience that many Americans that visit other countries often exhibit an attitude of entitlement. In this way they are rude and inconsiderate of other cultures. While not true of all ; it is true of many. It is the reason so many other countries strive to learn "English" while an American visiting will often expect this and won't bother to learn the basics of the country's language or customs. Often poo-pooing the customs because they aren't used to it. It is that arrogance that follows them everywhere and often right here at home in the good ol' USA.

The north and the south are like two different countries. The South is very laid back and everyone is friendly. In the North everyone seems to busy to stop and care about one another.

I've only been to 4 other countries, and YES, Americans are y far the most polite. But that could be because most of the world doesn't like Americans very much.

It completely depends on where in the U.S. and others perception. It is the same in the UK. Lots of people say that New Yorkers are rude, I am not a sensitive little soul, I find them brash yes, in a hurry, to the point...but not particularly rude ...no more than Londoners, I found it more amusing. I have only been to 9 states in the US and and have found good and bad in all states. Like I said, good and bad everywhere.

Yes, the people of America are well mannered. It depends on the person really. Not their race.

If, by Americans, you mean people from the USA, then they are not a race, more a kind of conglomerate.
Just because they say 'Have a nice day' and 'You're welcome' ad nauseam, it doesn't mean they're well-mannered. Brain-washed maybe, but they don't really think about these pat phrases which they utter.

I completely agree. My husband and I spent a month travelling around the U.S. and met some of the nicest people. Everyone was polite and friendly and interested.

Modern British society can learn a lot.

Well, where I live, there are alot of immigrants. As for the kids who are children of americans and so on and so on. It depends on the person. Ive noticed that alot of people here joke on other cultures or other languages, just becuase they don't understand it.
