Yeah, it's a sign.... and, you really need to think seriously about this.
When you 'cut' it releases certain endorphines in the brain and this is why you "feel better".
Instead of cutting, get in a quiet room...(bathroom). Fill the sink with ice and water. Place your hand into it up past the wrist. It won't take long for the stinging sensation to start. Keep it in there for as long as it takes to get that same "rush/high" you got from the 'cutting'.
This way, you are getting the release you're craving while at the same time leaving your beautiful body intact.
Take time to think. Write your feelings out on paper. Put them away in a safe place where you don't have to worry about them being found. Purge your emotions and deal with your inner self. Become aware of how special and unique you are and that no one but you can fullfill the purpose you are here for.
One such place to write is an online diary or blog. You might want to check out www.opendiary.com It's a free site that will allow you to keep an online diary with the choice of making it public or private or you can even choose to make it a "favorites only" diary meaning that only those you allow to read it are able to view your writings. Those that read are able to leave you public/private notes as well.
You are loved and supported upon this journey of a sometimes twisted mazewalk we call life, but you are strong and you can do this. I know you can!
Find someone you trust and talk. Don't rule out professional help. We all need help sometimes. ((hugs)) Remember that nothing last forever. When you are happy, happy don't last...well, you can trust that your sad times won't last either. *smiles*
Remember, behaviour is addicting. If you cut "just a little", this will eventually turn into alot. So, nip it in the bud now. Don't cut. Use the ice water and choose to be safe. You are worth it. (((( hugs tight )))

From what you're describing, it doesn't sound like your in real trouble yet. If it happens again, definitely get professional help.
It sounds like you had a bad day, and you wanted to punish yourself for some reason, and fell back on an old habit. (If cutting felt great, and got you out of a funk, it was because you 'wanted' to cut, but from what you're saying you didn't want to cut, per se. Cutting is hurting yourself, hurting yourself is normally a form of self punishment, therefore what you 'wanted' was to punish yourself)
If I'm understanding the situation right, I'd guess the pain you mention is a combination of guilt/shame for whatever you wanted to punish yourself for, and a little war going on in your subconscious because part of you doesn't see where you did anything wrong.
The best thing I can suggest is the next time you feel the same way, try to find out what you wanted to punish yourself for and instead of punishing yourself, find a way to forgive yourself. Remember that no one is perfect, and that the subconscious tends to blame us for things we have no control over.

Sliting your wrists eh? Well, that's indeed causing you more pain, more trouble. You need to find other ways for easing your pain, like hanging out with friends(just dont kill them) or beating your pillow, or scribbling notes on paper with a pen, what you really feel about life. Make a list of the bad things you have done, things you want to change. Then throw the paper away.
just don't hurt yourself, because if you end up dying, people you love will be devistated, whether you know it or not...
best of luck
