It's definitely fair that your adult children contribute for living at home.

If they expect mothers and fathers to clean-up after them, they should pay for the service.

If they expect mothers and fathers to wash their laundry, they should pay for the service.

If they contribute to the household having expenses, they should pay their fair share.

I don't have children, but a lot of us have returned home to live at one point or another and my parents are really cool about it. They charge rent, but then they save the majority of the money and return it when we move out so we have money for deposits or what nots. Occasionally they'd return it sooner in emergencies to help us buy things that were needed. They did rightfully expect us to help out around the house.

My parents charged me $25 a week. Not a ridiculous amount of money, but enough that I wasn't getting a "free ride." They knew I was saving for a house, and let me save. The deal was, as long as I was a full-time student I didn't have to pay, but once I was working (even part time, if I wasn't in school) I had to give the money. It didn't bother me at all. I felt it was more to teach me that everything costs something.
My fiance had to pay one bill per month (the cable bill...$150-ish). The only reason he complained was because his adult brother (who has a full time job) didn't have to pay anything.

Now we live on our own...I would love to go back to the $25/wk deal I had going!!! :Þ

You got it. Along with: cleaning up after themselves, household chores, doing their own laundry, buying some of the groceries, buy their own personal hygene items, & living by house rules.
The key word here is that they are adults & therefore need to have the responsibilities of being an adult.

Whether or not the money that they contribute to house is actually needed or not is not the question. If the money is not needed then it could be invested wisely for them & could either be used when they come to you asking for money or they could have it when you pass away.

I live with my parents and I have to give them money every two weeks. I think that it's fair to have adult children give rent to help their parents out in any way possible.

Yes, I would charge rent. Adults should be expected to pull their own weight. Don't give your adult child a free ride because they cannot go anywhere else and expect to live for free.

My mom charged my brother and I $100 each every 2 weeks. We were both on welfare, but I was working as a babysitter for the local Child Care services part time.

My brother had a huge problem with it, I didn't mind. As long as there was food there, warm house, then I was fine. It made me feel good that I was helping my mother financially.

I would make them pay a fraction of each bill that came into the
household. Those expenses will go up when they move in. If you
want to get them ready for the times that you can't help them I
would suggest doing so. Mom and Dad won't be around forever.

i dont have kids at home, but im an "adult child" living at home and my parents do not charge me. I am 27, i wish I could afford to move out, but I can't and they would never charge me or kick me out.
