It's all depends on the screen size of your monitor. You don't want text that are too small or too large. For a 17", 800x600 is the recommended resolution. At 19" you should have a resolution of 1024x768. At 20" -21", the resoultion should be 1152x864,.....and so on.....

If it's a digital display, it's whatever the native resolution of the display is. If it's a CRT, it's the highest resolution you can use while keeping the refresh rate above 80-85. Keep in mind, if you use widescreen, you will find that you won't maximize most of your windows because they would be too wide. It takes some getting used to, but in the end you'll find that it is easier to multitask that way.

The better the resoultion the more pixels = better quality. Some websites are designed for certain resolutions though I personally like 1280 by 1024 desktop and 1600 by 1200 for games.

It also depends on your own eyes, use which is comfortable for your eyes. Don't strain your eyes by keeping some resolution for the sake of it.

It depends on your monitor. I have a widescreen so I need to use 1400x900, but 1024x768 is basically the standard.
