using the word "like" too much?

Question

when i speak i use the word like alot i mean not too much but's more than the majority of people. I'm not a valley girl... I just want to know how i can change that i mean i cant just change overnight but what other words can i use as fillers? what can i do do improve my speech flow?

Consciously think about what you are saying. I'm an instructor, and one big problem with instructors is the word "uh", which is a fill in when you have a pause in your train of thought. "Like" is often the same thing. I think about what I am saying word for word in my head before I say it and it seems to help.

Try writing out what you want to REALLY say, and then 'read it' to your image in a mirror ... that will help you drop using 'like' or any other 'fillers' by 'filling your experience' with 'speaking properly.' Do this exercise in 'short steps' ... starting with 'half a minute' speeches (that's really quite LONG in 'normal speech) that you do four times a day, and working up to five minute speeches that you do four times a day. Also, LISTEN TO YOURSELF talk when you are 'in public' and do NOT be afraid to stop and say "I'm sorry, but I am trying to speak properly, and it's not always easy." THAT will get you lots of GOOD FEEDBACK and will also help you concentrate on not saying "LIKE" and other 'fillers' all the time.

yeah i do that too. just catch youself everytime you say it. actually a lot of guys say it too near where i live

speak slower, and think before you speak. take deep breaths and be aware of what you are saying.
