For some people the terrorists are at the White House and the mercenaries are the one at Downing Street. It all depends in which side you are.
For us ( western world ) terrorists are people who just kill without regards whether it is a woman, a child, a man. It fights for a cause. A mercenary can be good or evil. It depends on the reason he is paid too. A mercenary paid to do the dirty work nobodies want to do can be seen as a good but also as a terrorist.
For the people in the middle east : the terrorists are the US and the coallition. Bin Laden is seen as a hero and not a terrorist or mercenary.

Mercenary:
A mercenary is a soldier who fights, or engages in warfare primarily for money, usually with little regard for ideological, national or political considerations. However, when the term is used to refer to a soldier in a regular national army, it is usually considered an insult, epithet or pejorative.
Terrorist:
One who utilizes the systematic use of violence and intimidation to achieve political objectives, while disguised as a civilian non-combatant. The use of a civilian disguise while on operations exempts the perpetrator from protection under the Geneva Conventions, and consequently if captured they are liable for prosecution as common criminals.

Terrorism is a term used to describe certain violent or otherwise harmful acts or threats of such acts. Most definitions of terrorism include only those acts which are: intended to create fear or "terror", are perpetrated for a political goal (as opposed to a hate crime or "madman" attack), deliberately target "non-combatants", and are not conducted by a "legitimate" government. However, some definitions include state terrorism, and in many cases the determination of "legitimate" targets and the definition of "combatant" is disputed (especially by partisans to the conflict in question).
A mercenary is a soldier who fights or engages in warfare primarily for private gain, usually with little regard for ideological, national, or political considerations.

Anyone who murders women and children is not a freedom fighter. A mercenary is just a hired thug. A terrorist kills anyone they can just to terrify people.
