You're asking this question of a veteran? Well, here goes:

ALPHA BRAVO CHARLIE DELTA ECHO FOXTROT GOLF HOTEL INDIA JULIET KILO LIMA MIKE NOVEMBER OSCAR PAPA QUEBEC ROMEO SIERRA TANGO UNIFORM VICTOR WHISKEY X-RAY YANKEE ZULU.

This is called the phonetic alphabet, and was devised to insure that radio transmissions would be understood correctly during wartime conditions (gunfire, planes flying overhead, etc). It's very easy to mistake a "T" with a "D" or even a "B." Or a "J" from a "K" when all hell is breaking loose around you.
