my 4 month old pit bull eats his food in a matter of seconds. I heard that this can cause something called Bloat which can be very painful and can even cause death.

depending on how big he is just put toys in his food bowl so he has to eat around them, you can also put some of his food in a kong, that worked for my saint bernards. If he is pretty small, you can use ice cubes in his food bowl because they're smaller, that worked for my french bulldog. You need to get a handle on it while he is young because if a dog gets bloat it is very costly and usually fatal

About Bloat:
STEP 1: Be aware that this condition can be fatal. STEP 2: Know your dog's risk: The condition is most common in large and giant breeds. STEP 3: Help prevent bloating and torsion by feeding your dog twice a day. STEP 4: Avoid vigorous activity 1 hour before and after a meal. STEP 5: Be sure to always have water available for your dog, but prevent your dog from drinking large volumes immediately after exercise. STEP 6: Take your dog to the veterinarian immediately if within hours of a meal she is salivating, wrenching, vomiting and appears to have an enlarged abdomen.

I would slow down the feedings or get a food cube so he has to work to get it out slowly. Hopefully this is something that will slow down with age. Good luck! dd

it will only cause bloat if the dog is aloud to run around right after eating, and the dog is very deep chested. the eating to fast can cause the dog to throw up. You can put a tin can in the middle of the food bowl to slow down the eating. like a can of dog food or some other kind of can food.

Call the vet and see what they have to say about it causing bloat. But in the mean time, I would just give him a little at a time. It won't make him chew it any better, but at least you can slow down the amount going in at one time.

What kind of food are you giving him? Dry is best. I give my dog canned as a treat and when he gets it its gone in a flash.

(I was reading the comment about putting toys in his dish. I would hesitate to do this as he may just eat the toys.)

I have the same problem with my golden retriever, who's a year old. I put his food in an old muffin tin. The 12 little cups make it hard for him to take large mouth fulls of food, slowing him down a bit. People are always asking me why there's a muffin tin next to the water bowl!

Everything that everyone has said are good ideas. My dog also does this sometimes. She's always done it and has never had Bloat. I think its just how some dogs eat.

Start feeding him 4 times a day in fourths of his entire day's meal. That way he can't eat too much at one time.

Feed him smaller amounts, just more often during the day.

dogs eat that way because of their wild nature...dont give him so much at one feeding...maybe take time and feed a cup and then another
