if he's six he's most likely gullible. tell him that if he continues, his fingers will fall off and never grow back, and if he stops, reward him with a trip out to get ice cream or something ((nothings wrong with a little bribary))

Has he had medical advice on this problem, I would hope so......It is quite hard to answer this, because if he has a medical problem, I would say to you, get over it, and be their for your brother, but, on the other hand, if it is like sucking his thumb like a lot of young kids do, then I would put some pepper on it, my sister used to have echezma when we were kids, and she would drive me crazy at night time in our bedroom scratching herself, but I learnt to live with the noise and tried to help her be more comfortable. If your bro's problem is medical, then the last thing he needs is you harrassing him, you need to support him.
I dont know, if your parents are not doing anything about it, there must be areason why, ....... just be there for him as a brother......

A simple answer to your question is do nothing. He is very young and will sooner or later grow out of the habit of biting his nails, probably when he starts dating girls.

while he's sleeping dip his hands in a bowl with nail polish remover in it so every time he bites his fingers he'll be grossed out by the taste and hopefully stop

just sounds like a bad habit but it really isnt your problem since its not your kid. every time you see him doing it dont tell him to stop, just distract him by playing a game or reading a book. by telling him to stop yu are drawing attention to it and that might be what he wants, attention

Tell your parents. If they had him checked out, and it's not harming the boy, then just ignore it.
