I would get another opinion. I do think he's a bit young to say it's bipolar. Actually I would say no because being bipolar has to do with severe depression where there are extreme emotional highs and lows. I'm sure he's not depressed at that age. It may not be normal so go to another doctor and have him checked out.

Well Im assuming you meant he has been doing this since he was 6 months if he is only 18 months now. This is normal. My son did this too. He is just throwing a tantrum and doing anything to get attention. Everyone else didnt think it was normal, but kids will be kids. Mine is two and half now and has stopped. Dont worry it will pass.

Melissa is right on. He's way to young to be diagnosed or treated for bipolar. Does he become stressed in social situations? What triggers the head-banging? Some kids are just not "normal" ... in fact most are NOT. Don't worry if he's doing things that are unique. If he's not able to learn, interact socially, or cope with normal events, then maybe something is not quite right. If that's the case, give your doctor more details and even ask for a referral to someone who may know more.

No it's way too young. Some doctor's will diagnose a 2 1/2 year old with bi-polar if it's a pretty clear case, but that's the youngest. Is he banging his head when mad? If so it's probably for attention. Move him to a safe area, maybe on pillows, and then ignore him. If he doesn't get attention for it he will stop doing it.

OMG for one thing no they can't be tested for Bipolar that young. The way they are acting could either be normal or it's something else. I have bipolar, and its very hard to detect. When he hits his head put a pillow there so he doesn't hurt himself, my son did that too, the pillow helps and pick him up and hold him too to comfort and reassure him everything is OK and to calm him down. If you really have to put him in Time Out on the couch with No TV until he calms down and stops his temper tantrum. I understand its rough being a parent, I'm a parent of 2 boys. Kids will act out if there is stress in the house too, or if any stressful situation has occurred. I took a few Child development class to help me. And it has. I hope this is helpful. Good Luck!!

Well, I think they could test them at that young, but not positive. My friend adopted triplets 9 years ago and when they were 18 months, if I understand correctly, they were diagnosed with being bipolar. I would do some research online and look for a specialist who may be able to give you more answers.

How can he have been hitting his head since he was 6 years & only be 18 months? I'm guessing you mean 6 weeks? Head banging can be normal, or it might not be. It'd be pretty hard to tell with a child that young. It's not likely bi-polar, though, if it is something to worry about, it's more likely to be a result of encephalitis (brain swelling, kids sometimes try hitting their heads to make the pain stop) or it could be autism related. I'd try finding a different doctor, personally.

I agree with everyone else that it is not bi polar. Sounds more to me like autism. I have a friend that has an autistic little girl and that was the first symptom. But some do it just as a relaxation movement. I would definitely take him to a specialist to have him tested. Any Dr. that says to just let him do it, and doesn't test him for anything needs his head examined! Good luck with your boy!

Children are typically not diagnosed as bi-polar until their teen years and even so it is a rare diagnoses, as it usually peaks in the late teens early twenties.

Head banging is a common self soothing thing in kids....but if it is happening a lot along with extreme tantrums, I would be concerned about autism or asperghers (a very high functioning autism).

I would ask for a referral to a neurologist to check for any problems.

Children with autism and asperghers can live great high functioning lives if it is caught early and they receive proper support and therapy.
