My daughters second tattoo is on her hip where her pants rest. She followed guidelines for aftercare, however it has been 3 weeks and it has turned white. Is this just a scabbing, and delayed healing from her pants rubbing? Trying to get her to go back to the tattoo artist is like pulling teeth!

actually, a tattoo turning white can be a number of things.

you mentions she followed the guidelines, so i'm assuming it didn't turn white from her not keeping it moist. some people let their tattoos dry up so badly and when scratching it or having clothes (especially tough material like denim) rub on it, it causes it to scar over, turning it white. not all scarred tattoos turn white, but sometimes this is the case.

another cause of tattoos turning white is an adverse reaction to the ink. this is the more common situation. some people are allergic to red ink, and some people are allergic to organic inks. did she get her first tattoo by the same artist, using the same ink? if so i could only assume it wasn't an allergic reaction to organic inks, since i'm guessing the first tattoo healed just fine. does the tattoo even have red in it? if not, then i can't say she's allergic to red ink.

is the tattoo raised? how did it heal? is it smooth and shiny, or dry and dull? if it's raised, and had thick scabs form over it while healing and is now smooth and shiney, most likely it's scarred. if it peeled lightly, kind of like a sunburn, it's probably not scarring, but a problem with the ink. especially if it now appears dull and is dry.

her best bet is to go see the artist. almost any tattoo artist can look at a tattoo and know exactly what happened to it. i can even tell when people have scratched their tattoos when they claimed they didn't. i can tell when they let them dry up, or i can tell when it just healed naturally. so i would take her back to see the artist. you could call him first and see if maybe he can offer any advice over the phone, but most likely he won't know what's up until he sees it. good luck with that.

I'd like to know the same. Part of mine has turned a white colour, makes the black ink look grey and feels shiny and soft so am wondering if its a scar? I have had mine for about 3 weeks as well and the rest has healed perfect but one little part of it kept getting bumped and has now turned that way.

It might be because of her pants. It also depends on the colors, if its black, black is a hard color for some people to take, and most people have to get it redone for it to look black. Red is a color that can make people sick because of the dyes in it. It can cause iffections and alot of peoples skin wont even take the color red. If the tattoo place she went to is a walk in place then take her and see someone else. If its not then try and take her to another place.

never heard of a tattoo turning white, it should be completly healed in 3 weeks regardless of clothing rubbing on it, drag her back to the shop and have it checked out

before the 3 week mark i would've said infection, after the 3 week mark i would say he went to deep. that white is scar tissue. i definately wouldn't go back to him. let it heal for a few months and get a new artist at a new shop to fix it.

It takes 7 seconds for the Yahoo Answers page to open for me to be able to click on the [add your answer] button. thus, is my laptop slow?
