I have a few video files (Windows Media Player format) on my computer. Normally I click on a file and it will start to play. Then when the video is playing I can fast forward or rewind back to a certain point. The problem is some of the files won’t let me jump ahead or backwards. If I try and move play on by a couple of minutes the video jumps to the beginning again.

I have tried to play the same files on Real Player, but again it doesn’t let me move forward without playing the full video. I’ve tried taking off Windows Media player and installing an updated version (still have the same problem). I just wondered if anyone knows how to fix this problem, it doesn’t do it will all files, just some.
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Thanks for all your comments, everyone of them was helpful. It turns out the properties of these files say they are “Windows Media player” files, but in reality they’re actually ASF files. So I have managed to convert them to another format and now they’re playing fine.

It should occur to you that the fact that the files did the same thing in multiple media playing system should indicate that is the files that do not run. They are corrupt.
I would download:

Virtual clone Drive
and
VLC Media Player

Both are are extra cost however VLC will play pretty much everything.

I'm not sure, but I think that quicktime for windows allows real time scrubbing, just like on the Mac. So the thing to do is re-encode the files as an mp4, then use QT for playback.
