I live in Bangkok and it is not terrorists. It is true their were bombings around 8 or 9 at the same time on New Years at different locations. However, many feel this is not the work of terrorists but related to the former Prime Minister who is deposed and not allowed to come back in the country.

Both the BTS and MRT trains have the military checking bags and things before you can get on the train, so security has really increased

As in any situation, you need to be alert to suspicious things, packags, bags left lying around etc.

I was also at Siam Paragon Mall and it was crowded with people, so even though the bombs happened on New Years, it is pretty much life as usual here.

As far as must see attractions, see www.visualthailand.com there are 1000 of new photos of all the attractions here and it is like taking a mini-tour before you ever get to Thailand. 100' s of good stories about Bangkok and Thailand as well. This site has a ton of commercial free useful information for travelers coming to Bangkok.

The weather now is around 32c or 90f and it will get warmer in February so keep that in mind when you pack your clothes.

Good question - but don't worry if you are a tourist. Yes there were bombs on New Years Eve. The govt. says they were set by the ousted govt. - they were set off in telephone booths and other places where only 2 tourists were hurt - the royal family visited them the next day in the newspaper! (2-3 thais died and about 12 total people injured by 7 small explosions). So in general - tourism is safe and i would not worry about terrorism.

The 2 safety problems are 1. The south Muslim Thais set off bombs in southern thailand (not near tourist spots) 2. The old govt (or some other political thai group) may have set off a few small bombs on new years but these were also targeted at thais - not tourists. None since then.

Enjoy yourself - I think it is very safe personally!

There was bombings on New Year's Day this year but personally I feel it should be safe. I am in fact making a trip there next weekend, I know of friends who are making trips these two weeks as well. And I had a friend who was there on NYD who was totally ignorant or unaffected by the situation. If you have already made plans and made your bookings then I would say go ahead.
