It won't hurt as they put it on, but the pressure of the elastics will take some getting used to. Be prepared to eat soft, mushy food or drink soup for a week or so. After a while, your mouth will adjust to the pain.

In addition, the metal might wear against the inside of your cheek and your gums so be sure to ask for some wax to minimize the abrasions until your gums "toughen up".

Be sure to brush and floss properly during this time because braces will mean that plaque has more stuff to stick to!

After they take them off, they'll prolly give you a cleaning. It might feel a little awkward afterwards (due to the lack of the braces!) but you'll get used to it again. Plus, you'll have a totally straight smile!

Your teeth and gums will likely ache (and give you a headache) so take an Advil and you will fell better (or anything with ibuprofen). Your mouth will ache a little because they use a device to keep your mouth open (it made my lips hurt a little - just a very little). You may want to stock up on soft foods and ice cream (the cold soothes the gums and hey, any excuse for ice cream)

There may be a little pokey end of the wire after it's installed. Tell the doctor about it and he'll snip it off. (He'll also give you some wax to take home to put on pokey ends when you get home until the skin toughens up).

The glue is very sour if it gets on your tongue, but I don't remember it hurting my gums.

Your teeth and gums will ache every time the wire is replaced (because they're trying to move the teeth into place)

Most dentists and orthodontists are very sensitive to their patient's discomfort. Tell your doctor and ask him to warn you before he does something that might hurt. Feel free to bring your iPod loaded with music to distract you.

When they take the braces off they will basically just 'chip' them away. It felt weird, but it didn't hurt at all. (Kind of like tapping your tooth hard with your fingernail)

Hope this helps

It hurts. The glue they use to bind them on is painful to the gums and burns them [not literally, but it does hurt].
But the pain is very low.

It hurts much more a day or a few hours later. Then you will either be crying or popping pills.

Don't ask about taking them off, you have 3-5+ years till that happens.

it doesnt hurt to get them on it is uncomfortable because you have your mouth open for a long time and the glue tastes bad. Take some motrin after they are done because your teeth with be tender as they start shifting. As for something to do music or an audio book are both good ideas

before you go take an advil they hurt a lil bit pain at times they suggest you have a frosty after and each week u torque up and turn the key to tighten braces as they pull those ugly teef to a nice shape and it will be all worth it..

Umm it is'nt that bad all they really do is get the braces and the colors you want and then they get the cement and glue it on to your teeth but the glue is kinda hot so just tell them if it herts and then they'll slow down for you just tell them they'll make it better~*~

good luck! its exciting and yeah, a bit scary... i am not going to lie. it does hurt a bit- probably just because of nervousness. take tyelenol beforehand, and just do whatever you do to relax.. listen to music, think positive thoughts, and it goes by fast. the first few days are alot of adjusting- but after a year or two- when you get them off you feel great! just wear your retainer after!

i had braces when i was younger and i remember getting them and my mouth felt weird. lol like if you put gum on your upper gum. anyways your inside of your cheeks will get irritated so you need to use the wax they give you. and it will be uncomfortable when you go get them tightened but nothing to worry about. when you get them removed you will know it was all worth it. and it feels soooooo good. so dont worry to much its nothing that bad

it feels like a sharp and pointy mouth guard when you first get them on, and you'll hold your mouth funny for a few days and talk with a lisp. its all good though, you'll forget that you even have them after a while. i'm still waiting to get mine taken off :(

it really doesn't hurt at all. but maybe take a motrin. and most doctors won't mind you listening to your ipod - just ask beforehand so as to not seem rude.
