Kids love to run around naked, until social conditioning teaches them it's wrong and that they should be ashamed of their bodies. The problem in the U.S. is that many people associate nudity with sexuality, thus think that it's inappropriate for children. There are lots of nude beaches with families, and the kids have a great time without a swimsuit (that serves no purpose except to hide the areas our culture thinks should be hidden). Studies have shown that kids who grow up in nudist settings become healthy, well-adjusted adults. There is nothing wrong with kids seeing other human bodies in a nonsexual atmosphere like a nude beach. Parents should be on alert for their kids' safety just like anywhere else, but many families go to nude beaches for a fun, relaxing day.

Generally in Southern Europe it's much more common to see people topless on beaches, mainly because it's warmer. You don't generally see it in Ireland or Britain (the fresh wind can deter all but the hardiest of female nipples!), but it's not uncommon in Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia ...

Hey, I'm from Italy so trust me. Topless has been generally accepted since the early 90's - from memory, however nude is not, only in certain/secluded beaches, not public ones. Yes it's a religious country, however it has lots of contraddictions (and so do the US don't you think? :)

Topless: yes, Very common
Nude: no, only very small children or in private "specialized" beaches.

Girls usually go topless until they grow breasts (however, many little girls prefer wearing bikinis like their moms, but just because they want to look like grown ups). Personally, I don't think this is disgusting at all...A bikini is rather unconfortable if you don't have breasts to keep it in place!!!!!!

Yes, it is very common all over Europe. Slim, tall, short, fat, young, old...they all do it. Like someone else said, sometimes you really see stuff you just don't wanna see! :)
