We have a 4 month old puppy and while we are at work she is left at home - alone. She is gated off from much of the house, but where she does have access she destroys the carpet, her wee-wee pads, etc... I'm sure it's because she's bored. Anyone have any ideas for a stimulating dog toy to keep her somewhat busy? Thx!

First of all, get yourself a kong and fill it with dry food. Put peanut butter on each end to keep the food inside.

In addition, buy a variety of toys; different shapes, sizes, and textures. In addition to the kong, give her 3 or 4 different toys and a couple times a week switch the toys around.

One toy that my GSD puppy (9 months) loves is called a Jolly Ball. It comes in multiple sizes (she has the medium). It's actually her second one as she pully the rope out of the ball, but the original ball is still being played with outside. I purchased it at Petco.

Good place to buy dog toys (and other products at great prices) is Petedge (www.petedge.com)

How much exercise does she get when you are at home? Puppies have a high level of energy, and you have to spend a lot of time playing with them and walking them (assuming she has all her shots). If she gets enough exercise when she's not in her room, the destructive tendencies will decrease greatly.

That being said, leave her with the following:

- A stuffed Kong (http://www.kongcompany.com/worlds_best.html). Use peanut butter, cream cheese, treats, dog food, carrots or other veggies, or the special Kong stuffing they sell at pet stores. Freeze it for a few hours before giving it to her to make it extra challenging!

- A Buster Cube (http://www.bustercube.com/). Fill this with her kibble and make her work for her meals!

- Nylabones (http://www.nylabone.com/). The non-edible ones are virtually indestructible!

- Plush Puppies toys (http://www.sitstay.com/store/toys/intelli1.shtml). These "reusable" soft toys let you stuff the main toy with smaller toys over and over again, and dogs love getting the smaller toys out!

- A handful of toys from the local dollar store. Buy these by the dozen, and leave a few each day for her to destroy at will - at a dollar each, it's affordable!

These are all toys that I have left my dog with that he absolutely LOVES and keeps him stimulated both physically and mentally. And they are all available from your local pet store, like PetCo or PetSmart.

The kong is a great toy. Try filling it with a mix of canned food and dry food for a great treat, or just fill it with pieces of dog treats that are just slightly too big to fall out of the big opening- you have to squeeze the kong to make the hole oblong, then put the treat in and it will take a long time for the dog to get it out.

As far as the dog destroying where she's at while you're gone, you should get a crate for her. It will help tremendously in housebreaking her (far, far better than pee pads), and she won't destroy your house.

I don't know if you would want the spend the cash, but Kong makes a thing that dispenses Kongs filled with treats. It works on a timer and holds 4 Kongs I think. My dog will stay busy with a Kong stuffed with peanut butter forever.

there is toy called kong. they come in many different sizes. you can fill them with treats and cap the hole at the end with peanut butter then freeze it over night and give it to your puppy while you are away and it will spend hours trying to get the treats out. they also have "kong stuff" that you can use instead of the peanut butter. most pet stores sell them. I hope this helps.

Kongs of course are always the favourite :D I found with my puppy that she would be entertained for hours by just having a simple empty soft drink bottle filled with rice (be careful to make sure the lid is on really tight!), she loves the sound of the rice moving around and will chase it around like crazy.

What I always did with my dogs was take a plastic bag and put a piece of meat or a treat inside and tangled it all up so that its really hard to get to. It may be a mess but it is easy to clean up(maybe a couple seconds of your time, if that) For a puppy it would probably take about an hour(half hour, etc.) or so, maybe if you put another one there too to keep him occupied for longer periods of time. I hope I helped!

Oh yes! I know of the perfect toy. It is called a babble ball. My Jack Russell terrier has one and it is with out a doubt, the best toy ever.

Treats balls. You fill then with little dog biscuits and as your dog noses them around they gradually fall out. Even the dumbest of dogs can do it. You just quickly show them how it works. They should be avialable at your local vet or pet shops.
Hope this helps!
