I have 2 cats, a male and a female. For the longest time, I suspected it was the male, i would come home and find throw up and stools on the carpet. One day I was home and found out that it is the female doing that. I had recently changed their food from Purina to Cat chow, and now she has done it 3 days in a row. I know it could be the cat food, or something else. I can understand that she would throw up, she usually gobbles her food, or maybe she doesnt like the new food, but why is she defacation outside the litter box when she throws up? I keep a clean litter box, food and water. I am so sick and tired of cleaning the carpet, I know I need to take her to the vet and change the food, but what in the world would cause a cat to behave this way ???

A lot of times when a cat is going outside of the box, they are trying to get your attention or are having a medical problem. I would talk to your vet about this.

Food could definitely be the culpret. You may have a kitty with dietary intolerances. Canned or raw food diets are best, and kitties with sensitivities often need to avoid grains, veggies, fruits, fish, and beef in their diets. They are obligate carnivores and are made to eat meat - not the grains that you will find in Purina Cat Chow. I suggest that in addition to talking to your vet, you try to find some wet food that has no grains, veggies, fruits, fish, or beef (read the ingredients!)

Good luck!

I changed my cats food to another really good quality cat food and she threw up for days. When cats feel like this there whole behaviour can change. 1st thing i would do is give the cat some very bland food for a couple of days such as Boiled chicken and rice. Once the vomiting has settled (this is provided she is not sick in any other way, i.e. Diarrhoea, lethargic etc etc), This is very bland food and gentle on the digestive tract.
Is there a reason why you changed foods?? If not then swap it back it obviously agrees with her more.

If you want to change it back the theory is you should do it slowly.
70% of what you normally feed the cat and 30% of the new food, now over a period of 10 days increase the food you want to give and decrease the food you do not.
Try that if she continues to vomit have her definitely checked

Now this is only advice and i cannot see your cat so if you believe she is sicker please stop asking in these forums and take your cat to the vet. Your cat maybe suffering dehydration from vomiting, is the happy in itself? is it keeping its water down? if yes to both of these you could try the food thing for a day and see how you go

This does not replace Vet's professional advice

Although the brands you mentioned aren't the best, always introduce new food gradually. Mix a little new with the old until you phase the old out. Not using the box could be her way of telling you her tummy is upset.

I would still take her to the vet. just in case.

If a cat is sick it will do things to get your attention using the floor instead of the litter box is a sure sign she wants your attention,,,Take her to the vet and have it checked out.

Cats vomit sometimes but since your cat is doing it so often, and defecating possibly at the same time, you need to take her to the vet. She could be doing this for a variety of reasons ranging from serious to simple.

it is likely do to food change, change back slowly to original food. I could also be a age related problem. Make sure they still are drink and not getting dyhdrated. It also could be from hair balls. your local vet should have more info.

Has she been tested for FLV? I have had a couple of cats with it, that have had similar symptoms. Are the stools loose? Thats one of the symptoms. Unfortunately, these animals had to be put down before they suffered any more. Have her tested. I dont want to freak you out, but it is very common.

It's best to call the vet and ask them. Anytime a pet acts out of the ordinary, it's time for a vet visit!

She needs to go to the vet ASAP. She may have serious, life-threatening health issues that are causing this, and constant vomiting is a serious concern.
