He needs to see a counselor. There is a kind of therapy called CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) that is just as effective as medication for treating depression, and lasts longer after treatment stops. There could be other issues at play, so seeing a counselor will also help him to sort those out. He can just yahoo or google "counseling" and the name of the city he lives in. Almost all qualified counselors (masters degree and above) are familiar with treating depression. Though shopping around for someone he feels comfortable with is a good idea if the first one or two aren't a good match. You've got a lucky friend.

Well about 18 months ago I was seriously considering tossing myself under a bus. I cried most of the day for no reason, I hated getting out of bed, I managed to "put on a face" when my husband got home and pretended to be fine. I was convinced that I was happy being "The saddest woman in the world"-- that's how I referred to myself. I gained weight (didn't care) and seriously considered suicide, thinking everyone would be better off without met because I was a big fat drag. I saw no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel. My life was dark, black- a giant black hole I couldn't crawl out of. (I've never experienced that level of tota despair in my life!)
I went to an acupuncturist and within 30 minutes I felt a giant HUGE burden off my shoulders. I actually smiled. I made a joke. I felt bright. I went back for about 11 times in total and have never felt that depressed again.
(I remember almost needing to ask my husband to speak to the doctor for me because I was so close to breaking down in tears)
So, yes, I'm literally living proof that it can be overcome. And even when I got ill for like 9 months, I never became THAT depressed.

Sometimes a person can overcome a very mild depression by going to a counselor, making appropriate life changes, and working on your self talk.
If you are diagnosed with Major Depression, generally, you need to do the above and also take antidepressant medication.

Yes, there are many alternative options to medication. Someone suffering from depression may find relief with exercise, finding a hobby or something that makes you feel happy, or talking to someone, such as a friend, therapist, or clergyman, about your problems. Dealing with depression is very personal and each person deals with it in their own way. You may need to try a number of different things in order to find out what works for you.

Yes you can and the best way to do it is to pull yourself together no matter how you are feeling and get your butt up and say. I will not live like this anymore, I have to much to offer and life has passed me by to long now and I am so much better than this, I have a life and I will live it and join the ones I love, I have to much to offer this world and there are to many happy things left for me to see and do, Just focus on the positive things and make yourself get up and join the living. YOU CAN DO IT!! Come on show the ones that love you just what you are made of.

No success, personally. I've read many books and tried many products, special diets, use exercise, etc. It may be possible for some people, but not for me.
