In the middle ages the monarchy's used to support the churches, at first it was because everyone was the same faith and it was all good. But as the years went on the money was starting to buy favors, like if you wanted a certain guy to be a bishop or a cardinal, all you had to do was just pay out the cash and his position was bought for him, like with a lot of political positions are today. The exception is the Chinese communist governments they keep saying they can appoint whoever they want but then they don't 'get it' yet.
That is why the Church vied for the separation of Church and State, so the State can't tell the Church who to appoint.
The congregations pay for the support of their parish each Sunday that is what collections are about.

From the donations of its members--which is the only place it has any business getting one cent.

You've put your finger on one of the reasons why some so-called religious leaders want a "Christian" state in this country--so they can use the power of the state to extort money from those who do not happen to belong to their church/denomination. That--at its heart--is the only motivation false relligious leaders ever have for opposing the seperation of church and state.

In the U.S., members give money directly to the church on a regular basis.

At most, a basket is passed around during the weekly service.

With love in Christ.

The tithes and offerings of the people of the church.

Malachi 3:8-10
8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.
9 "You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.

They bilk the money of its members by asking for "offerings" or "tithing". Basically, the members of the church support the guy ranting behind the pulpit, and pay for the maintenence and upkeep of the church building. IMO, this money could be used for much better (and more sensible) causes. (And I bet Jesus would agree!!!)

the church gets money from donations, the passed basket at mass, and people who will their estate. This does not include the cash the priest's take, though.

Don't forget! Even in the US, churches are tax exempt, so...
we all pay for them in some small way...besides just
being annoying.
