Always always always. I always check the ratings and talk to other parents before purchasing videogames or movies for children. And I don't usually just go by the rating, I go online and ask parents what's really in the game.

My nephew (13 years old) was just purchased Grand Theft Auto by his adult babysitter. She had no idea what was in the game and personally, I think that it was her responsibility to know first hand. His dad didn't even know it was so horrible for kids until we told him about the racist and sexual themes.

When in doubt, leave it out. Or ask the parents if they have any recommendations.

Of course. No sex themes or gory violence. No nintendo style gaming at all. Research is clear it's bad for them.

Age of Empires, for one example, is an awesome game that teaches tons about history and human development. Kids don't need garbage and shouldn't be exposed to it.

Yeah I did... but I got my daughter things I figured she would enjoy and things she understood. Now it really doesn't matter, she is 21 and purchases her own games now...you should see the one she has from Playboy!

I don't buy any of that garbage for my kids. They are completely useless.
