Good reasons -

1) removal of old growth forest which actually create more CO2 than producing O2.

Cleared areas are reforested, therefore younger trees and stands will produce more O2 than old growth forest stands..

**Not all rainforest are cleared for farmland....they are actually reforested***

2) Economic growth for the country and employment for forestry workers.

3) Simulates/Mimics a forest fire or forest health infestation (insects & Disease) within the forest stand.

4) Creates new wildlife habitat/feeding areas for some animals with the new foliage and younger growth in the clearcut forest.

5) With Forest Development (road construction) in the areas it opens up and allows more access for people that enjoy recreational activities in the forests.

It provides farmland for poor people who otherwise would not have any. It provides wood that poor people can sell to make money or burn for fuel. That is about it. Those are the two main reasons rain forests are cleared. Poor, landless people in Brazil going out into the Amazon rain forest and clearing farm land or cutting and selling all the wood they can.

The main reason we shouldn't allow them to be cut is oxygen. The rain forest, along with all the trees on this planet, provide the oxygen we breath. The reason they are being cut is for cleared farm land and lumber. Which is most important? I rest my case.

Of course it is a good thing for some greedy multinational companies who put profit before the needs of planet earth. It may appear a good thing for struggling peasants who require more land to eke out a meager existence; who see the needs of their hungry children as paramount.
