I need some sort of mat to catch the litter from the cats' paws as they exit the box. I've tried the ridged and Astroturf-style mats but they just jump over those - because they don't like the way they feel on their paws, I guess.

Has anyone found something that's effective for catching litter scatter that the cats will actually use & not just jump over?

I sweep the area frequently, but it would be nice to have something to contain the scatter in between cleanups. Thanks!

I have used the regular door mats that you can get pretty cheap from Walmart. You can get them in different sizes. The ones I use are about 3 ft long.

Go to somewhere like DG [Dollar General] or WM [WalMart], and buy one of those outdoor matts which are made of the straw looking material, The bristles are closer together and stronger than lighter materials. This catches the loose kitty litter like a big broom. You can simply then shake it outside every day or two, to get out the litter. The larger the matt the more it will catch, I recommend a larger one, especially if your kitty throws a lot of litter out while covering his or her mess, like my cat does.

I would not recommend a different litter box, since my cat has always thrown litter out of those too. :) Your best bet & buy is the type of matt I mentioned. You can ALSO spray it with Lysol once a week to keep down germs, kitties get a lot of germs on their paws and track them through the house. This will cut down on that as well, they sell Generic Lysol in the spray can at DG & WM too. Let the matt dry FULLY before replacing it under the litter box, otherwise the kitty will get it on his or her feet.

I use plain, clear, plastic runners, the long ones and over lap them to form a wide area. The cats do not seem to mind the feel of them and they usually shake their paws towards the end of the runner which catches most of the litter. It doesn't catch all of it but it does better than most things I have tried!!

If you have young, healthy cats consider changing what you use as a litter box. I use deep rubbermaid totes instead of regular litter boxes. They are cheaper and when the cats have to jump up and out of the box they get MUCH less litter on the floor.

Old newspaper. Then you can scrumple it up with the scattered litter tucked inside. Cats seem to like the feel of it under their paws, and as you can throw it away every time there's no worry about the smell of cat pee or poo soaking into your carpet!

I have the litter trays in a back room that has a large fine fibre carpet in front of them. It's easy to vacuum up instead of sweeping and the cats don't mind the feel.
