This seems like a confusing question for many people, because often people believe what the ancient Romans believed because of their direct influence on the Roman Catholic Church, which of course directly affected the modern Protestant beliefs as well. Accordingly, mortals have a detachable thing they call a soul that can go to either the Elysian Fields, or to Tartarus, depending on their deeds, good or bad, respectively. This ties directly into the mistaken idea that the sinners souls will forever roast in Hell. However, according to the Holy Bible, the soul is in essence a living person. When you take the body, and add God's gift, the breath of life (often called spirit), you have a living soul. The Holy Bible, King James Version

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Hope this was helpful!

The spirit soul does not evolve like the body. The body has got six transformations, namely, the body takes its birth, it grows, it remains for some time, it produces some by-products and it dwindles and then it vanishes. All these six changes of the body are not applicable to the soul. The soul is permanent. It has no development, no decrease, no destruction, nothing of the sort as compared with the body. The only difficulty of the soul is that in the conditioned state of material body, the soul is supposed to forget its identity; by chanting Hare Krishna gradually the soul revives its identity or it comes out from the forgetfulness. This is not exactly development, but it is reviving one's consciousness.

"1. Spirit beings are souls; the two terms are synonymous. The spirits in pre-existence were souls (Abraham 3:23). After the spirit leaves teh body adn goes into the spirit world to away the day of the resurrection, it is still designated as a soul (Alma 40:11-14).

2. A mortal soul, however, consists of a body and spirit united in a temporary or mortal union. The natural body is the house or tabernacle of the eternal soul or spirit. 'The Gods formed man from the dust of the ground, and took his spirit (that is, the man's spirit), and put it into him; and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.' (Abraham 5:7)

3. An immortal soul is a resurrected personage, one who has been raised from mortality to immortality, one for whom body and spirit have become inseparably connected. 'And the spirit and the body are the sould of man. And the resurrection from the dead is the redemption of the soul.' (Doctrine and Covenants 88:15-16, Alma 40:23.)

soul as used in the bible, the bible was originally written in Hebrew and Greek. the Hebrew work ne'phesh or the Greek work psykhe'. when the used of this work in the bible it becomes evident that this word basically refers to (1) people, (2) animals, or (3) the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
People: in Noah's days a few people that is eight souls, were carried safely through the water (1 peter 3:20) clearly soul stands for people.
Animals: god said let the waters swarm forth a swarm of living souls and let flying creatures fly over the earth upon the face of the expanse of the heavens, and God went to say let the earth put forth living souls according to their kinds, domestic animal and moving animal and wild beast of the earth according ti its kind (genesis 1:20,24 )
life as a person: sometimes the word soul means one's life as a person . God told moses: all the men who were hunting for your soul are dead ( exodus4:19) they were seeking to take moses life
the soul and the spirit are not the same. the body needs the spirit in much the same way as a radio needs electricity- in order to functions.when the spirit, or life -force, leaves the body, the body dies and it returns to where it came from-God (JOB 34:14,15; PSALM 36:9)

This is a question I have struggled with for years; the Bible seems to be a bit vague on the whole thing. Also what is the distinction between soul and spirit?

The soul is the spirit of God. The Self is the product of the soul, mind and heart. The soul is the good part that returns to its location in the God that blew it in the body after death and then the self continues in another form the after death life.

There is the body (flesh), the spirit (soul), and the mind (also "heart" or intelligence).

Your soul is what lives on after your body is dead. Your soul is also the part of you "that never grows old"; the part of you that yearns for "something more".

The Bible says at Ezekiel 18:4 Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die. - NWT

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. - KJV

This and other scriptures show that soul dies. Your soul is you.
