The minimum PT requirements listed above by someone fails to mention that for the Marine Corps, if you only do those minimums, and just the minimums, you flunk.

First of all, endurance can come in many forms: For example, endurance and courage are related by the following quote:

Courage is endurance for one moment more…
Unknown Marine Second Lieutenant in Vietnam

Endurance does not necessarily mean you are the best: Let's look at what some Army Brass has said about Marines:

Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.
General Mark Clark, U.S. Army

Why does it seem like the Marines always get the toughest jobs:

My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.
2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

An immeasurable value is placed on "pride" in an organization and can actually boost the normal performance of an individual to "superhuman" levels. For instance, the following quote demonstrates the value of "esprit de corps":

There was always talk of espirit de corps, of being gung ho, and that must have been a part of it. Better, tougher training, more marksmanship on the firing range, the instant obedience to orders seared into men in boot camp.
James Brady, columnist, novelist,
press secretary to President Reagan, television personality and
Marine

The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, 'The elite of this country.' I think it is the elite of the world.
Admiral William Halsey, U.S. Navy

But finally, irrespective of combat experience in enhancing otherwise normal physcial abilities, consider the following quote from a common housewife:

"Everything becomes a little clearer, I realize what life is all about. It's hangin' on when your heart has had enough, It's giving more when you feel like giving up".
~ In My Daughter's Eyes, Martina McBride

The American fighting man always will give more when they could just as soon give up.

The Marines pride themselves on that. But don't measure by endurance, measure by GUTS. The Marines are usually the first ines in, the Arme usually comes in after things are under control and the AF and Navy usually provide logistically support. Not always but normally.

The Marines is the hardest of all the armed forces.
I think the Army comes in second.
The Air Force comes in third.
The Navy could tie for third as well.
The Coast Guard fourth.

Marines requires more physical endurance because the operations are amphibous in nature that requires a lot of running with loads on their backs.

There are variations within each branch of service. The USMC has the tightest standards overall, but the special operations people such as the Green Berets or Seals have extremely high standards that exceed the normal USMC ones.

If you're talking endurance you're talking about the Marines, cut and dry.

Running 2 miles, running 1 mile, riding an exercise bike and having your heart rate checked... nope, that's not endurance.

I am a Marine who is no longer actively serving. I believe the Marines ask most out of their basic recruits but after that I believe the level of conditioning depends on your type of service.
