The answer, is three ducks... anymore would not work..
if there was five, then there would be four ducks in front of one, and four ducks behind one. The same with six or seven or ....however many.
And if others are off to the side, and sort of behind, they would still not be directly behind. Only three.

Depends. There can be an infinite number of ducks.
3 would be the least number of ducks possible.
If you had duck A, duck B and duck C in a row behind duck A is duck B and C. In front of duck C is duck is duck A and B.
However if you had duck A, B, C, D, E, F and G all in a row there is 2 in front of C and 2 behind D. Thus there can be an infinite number of ducks as long as there is 3 or more.
