I consider how they would feel if I did something, whether it would hurt them etc, but it would not stop me doing something if I really wanted to do it. For example, I wanted to get married and my parents did not approve to the extent where they said they would not come to the wedding. I thought about this and still decided to get married, as I felt they would be more sorry than me for not attending. This turned out to be true, even though I divorced that husband 3 years later.

I am middle aged, married with 2 kids and I still think about what my parents would say! It doesn't make so much of a difference now and I often do things they wouldn't approve of but I know now that I have to live my own life as being true to yourself is what makes you happy and ultimately, your parents only want your happiness too - so everyone wins!

I am an adult, I consider things but do not let them RULE me..
I want my children to THINK things out but have them make up their minds. They presently are very MORAL and have WISDOM and good heads...
If a child just follows EVERYTHING the parent believes I think that is sad..

your parents are not saints remember they were teenagers too and only try to guide you not to make the same mistakes they did
there are times you could kill them but they love you and want to protect you thats all any parent can do. it seems they are doing a good job with you you really do think first about your mums reaction before doing .well done you xx

yes i'm in my 20's and none of my friends understand. i go to college and live at home at weekends on holidays so still cant get away from it. i've often lied to them but not advisable because those lies led to one big huge lie and now i'm in severe trouble if they find out so for the next year i'm walking on eggshells so they wont. so now i have to consider their ideas and beliefs in everything i do get into less trouble that way lol

Yes ! I'm getting old myself now, but my mum's opinion still counts believe it or not. Not that I've always followed her ways - I made my own life and have done things she didn't agree with, but I'd say that the basic moral values she instilled in my (by her example , not be lecturing me or anything) have stayed with me. I think the secret is to let parents know that you respect their ways, but that you have to find your own set of values etc., and they may or may not be the same.

To a certain degree. Life is a compromise. If you have any compassion for your friends or family, you monitor the way you behave so as not to cause too much upset.

Yes. I'd have moved to the USA by now, only I can't leave my parents as they get old. It's not pressure or threat from them, I just care too much to up and abandon them.
