Yes, it does work - They've been prescribing it for years.

Yes vets can and do prescribe Prozac, for a variety of conditions. To tell whether it's right for your pet, and to obtain it, of course you would have to go to the vet to get the correct dose.

No doggie Prozac. Prozac appears to work on a whole spectrum of animals. I remember reading an article a little less than a year ago, about the fact that humans are excreting so many anti-depressants that it's showing up in fish not far from shore.

There are some medications that do help with SA, but you need to make sure you have a vet that knows what they are doing. Make sure they moniter your pet's liver while the animal is on the medication. It isn't "prozac" at least, not the one I'm thinking of which is called Clhomacalm (or something close to that). There are other options for treatment of SA. Some dogs do well in a crate (though mine didn't). Get and read the booklet called "I'll be Home Soon" you can find in on amazon.com. It has a step by step plan for rehabilitating dogs with SA. It's short and entertaining. I read it in one sitting! plus, paying the 7 or 8 dollars for the book is MUCH less costly, and in my opinion much better for the dog in the long run. Good luck!

Vets can prescribe an antidepressant called Clomicalm. it can have side effects - vomiting and diarrhea. This drug is meant to be used in conjunction with behaviour modification training - that is getting the dog used to being alone, starting for very short time periods, gradually increasing in length. You need to be very careful how you leave - never say good-bye to the dog, no eye contact, don't make any kind of a big deal out of it, just go. Same idea when you come home, ignore the dog for the first few minutes, then greet very quietly and calmly - no fuss. If you work on it combined with the drug, should help your dog.

The Prozac used in dogs is the same that is used in humans. I would get this dog into a good behavorist for an evaluation. If you are in Indiana, Purdue University has a great behavior clinic. Dr. Andew Luescher is the head of the clinic and is a wonderful behaviorist.

The prozac that dogs use is the same that we use (as well as many other drugs that are used for dogs). Depending on the dogs body weight, the doseage may change (for example, they may tell you to cut the pills in half.

Prozac works on dogs to reduce (but not necessarily eliminate) all types of anxiety. Talk to your vet if you are curious whether it might work for your particular dogs variety of separation anxiety and its symptoms.

It does help with the separation anxiety and anxiety in general, it is the same prozac just dosed for animals.

What should I avoid while taking Prozac?

Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Prozac.
Ask your doctor before taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for pain, arthritis, fever, or swelling. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others. Using an NSAID with Prozac may cause you to bruise or bleed easily.
This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

any vet prescribing prozac will never treat one of my dogs...... They make many diffrent toys to help with anxiety in dogs. many have your voice recorded into them. always take it slow. seperate a little each day. and keep them entertained. There are other herbal remedies in the pet stores.

I've heard of one incidence where this was prescribed and I didn't believe the owner. I have never sen a vet prescribe this! Separation anxiety would be treated with anti-anxiety drugs, as a LAST resort.

I'm guessing the dose is doggie size. They are probably prescribing it for dogs because they can't sue the drug company when the dog commits suicide.
