I wanted a more untraditional type of wedding dress. Perhaps something blue with a sheer white over it. Any thoughts or experiences?

That sounds really nice. I got married for the second time about 9 years ago, and I wore a beautiful dark purple cut velvet dress. The first time, I got married in a light blue pant suit in Reno. I guess you could say the place was not auspicious.
Sheer white over blue sounds lovely. I would concentrate on the beauty of it rather than the color.

I wore a black dress with flowers on it much nicer then it sounds! It is only an American thing to wear the white $$$ dress! I loved my dress. Some wear dress suits. And blue is fine the Amish do this all the time. Check dress shops that do formal dresses as well as wedding dresses. The important thing is that you love the dress not the color

I wore an ice pink dress make of duponi silk with some white and lots of swarovski crystals. It was very modern but a teensy bit traditional.
Try going to www.maggiesottero.com and checking out her dresses. There are a lot that have color in them or come in different colors. It's where I got mine and i loved it!
Another idea is to buy a bridesmaid dress that can be used as a wedding dress. try www.watters.com they have some great bridesmaid dresses that could easily work as wedding gowns.

Good luck and congratulations!

I got married in Las Vegas with my husband and a female witness we picked up on the street LOL that was it.
It was December and I wore a long brown skirt, black heel shoes, blue light v shaped sleeve jacket and white blouse underneath the jacket.
It was a non traditional wedding and it was only 3 of us.
We have been married for 4 and a half years.

I think whatever you want you do you are the bride its your day so do it dont worry about everyone elses reactions or thoughts. I was in a wedding where the bride wore dark purple, it was a gorgeous dress it had a huge train and it had long arms it was beautful and purple, so if you want blue go for it, its your day not anyone elses!

I haven't gotten married yet and our plans keep changing, but for now, I'm thinking that my fiancee will wear a navy suit and I will wear a navy dress. We are getting married at city hall this May and then having a larger wedding (more of a renewal I guess) for everyone to attend next May. I'll probably wear a skirt I already own to city hall, but to the May wedding, I'd like to wear this dress from J.Crew in Navy: http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod68585431&catId=cat140124&rltdProd=0&reco=&title=&suiting=

We won't have any attendants and it will be less of a traditional affair.

I want it to be special, but I don't want to wear a wedding dress that isn't "me." I commend you for wanting to do something that is more in line with who you are, rather than following the crowd.

My DH and I married at the Renaissance Festival, so we wore Period clothing. My chemise was black and my over-dress was black with burgundy roses. DH wore a purple poet shirt, gray tunic, black pants and his high boots. My Gram (who was our Flower Girl and Ringbearer) wore a beautiful scarlett red. My mother, my MoH, wore cream and burgundy, while DH's mom, his Best Mom, wore hunter green.

It's your day, wear whatever you want. Remember, in some cultures, white is for funerals, black is for weddings. And the theory that white is virginal is incorrect...white represents the purity of the marriage bond, not the consummation (or lack yet thereof) of it.

Its becoming more frequent that brides dont wear white. The designers are almost all making dresses in pinks and blues, but really soft ones.

Also, I have seen brides who wear white but big colored sashes or the fabric of their train is a different color. Neat looking.

I think its yor day, you should do it.

I wore a light pink dress and wore light pink low cut heels. Very non-traditional.

I wore an off-white dress with red trim with bronze floral embroidery within it.

Do what you like... if blue is your cup of tea, go for it!
