REPORTS TALLY BIRTH DEFECTS HIGH COST

By MIKE STOBBE, AP Medical Writer 20 minutes ago

ATLANTA - Birth defects lead to more than $2.5 billion a year in hospital costs alone, according to the first national studies to estimate their financial burden on U.S. families.

The reports are the most comprehensive to look at the costs of birth defects in at least 10 years, experts said.

The studies also will give many families their first real idea of the expense of a baby born with serious birth defects, said Dr. Nancy Green, medical director for the March of Dimes, which campaigns for birth defects prevention.

The first study, released Thursday, was done by researchers at the University of Arkansas and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and used 2003 data from 36 states.

Certain birth defects were particularly deadly: For example, about 85 percent of babies born with anencephaly — that is, born without all or most of their brain and skull — died in the hospital.

Yes - if there is a god that you thank for the good then that god is to blame for the bad.

No - if you accept that god doesn't exist.

BTW I can't believe that there is someone here who worships a god who would make an innocent child suffer and even die just to punish the parents for some sin. If there was a god and that was the way he worked, he would not deserve our worship.

Absolutely not! Though many feel that such tragedies are “God’s will” or that he is punishing the parents for some past sin, the Bible, God’s Word, shows that such is not the case. For instance, Jesus’ disciples asked why a certain man was born blind. They asked Jesus: “Who sinned, this man or his parents, so that he was born blind?” Jesus then made clear that birth defects are not a punishment from God, saying: “Neither this man sinned nor his parents.”—John 9:1-3. What Is Responsible? There is a variety of causes of birth defects. At times they occur because of a mix-up in the baby’s microscopic chromosomes or genes. This may or may not have been inherited from the parents. However, the Textbook of Medicine states: “In most malformations no major factor can be identified, and it can be presumed that their existence is due to the complicated interaction of genetic and environmental influences or to special rare genetic combinations.” Some factors believed to play a role in causing birth defects include: illness or exposure of the mother to certain diseases during pregnancy, radiation injury, chemical pollution, drugs (even some considered safe during pregnancy), excessively large quantities of some vitamins, malnutrition, improper diet, certain living conditions, age of mother, race, and even the season of birth. Frequently, wars and greedy commercialism have caused conditions that led to birth defects. On the other hand, certain actions by a parent can increase the risk of birth defects. Some lead loose and immoral lives to the detriment of their unborn offspring. The baby can be deformed because the parents contract a venereal disease or are in an incestuous relationship. Also, parents may hurt their developing fetus by indulging in narcotics and tobacco. However, the basic cause of deformed children is the disobedience of the first couple, Adam and Eve. Their sin against God caused them to lose their perfection of mind and body and produce “defective” children. Each succeeding generation progressively drifted farther away from perfection. Therefore, even if there were no adverse technology, war, malnutrition or immoral behavior, there would still be deformed children by virtue of the fact that we are born of imperfect parents.

Deadly or not, birth defects are a result of biological and environmental factors. consumption of alcohol / drugs (illegal or prescription) at any time during the pregnancy and smoking place the developing embryo at great risk for suffering from a wide range of birth defects. Pollution is another component that will affect the way a baby is born. Exposure to lead can harm young children and babies even before they are born.

Children with high lead levels in their bodies can suffer from
damage to the brain and nervous system, behavior and learning problems, slowed growth, etc.

So to answer your question, there is no God (of any faith) involved in birth defects. Women who do not take care of themselves during pregnancy, or even in some cases before pregnancy, will have a higher instance of having a child who suffers from some sort of birth defect ranging from mild to severe.

Many birth defects are caused by man and greed. When big companies pour toxins into the air, rivers and streams, is this God's fault? The Bible says that God will one day bring to ruin those ruining the earth! God created a beautiful, clean , breathtaking environment for mankind to tend and care for. One that he could enjoy living in. What did man do? He polluted everything! This is NOT God's fault! It is time that people take responsibility for the damage they have caused and stopped blaming God! He is the One who will send His son, Jesus to rule the nations soon and clean up the mess we have gotten ourselves into!

yes. It is as simple as that. How could people say God is a loving God if he allows all these hardships to befall his most loved creatures? Why should we ALL suffer because the orignal two jackasses, Adam and Eve, sinned? Is that fair? Of Course not. Parents are held accountable and hated if they don't do all they can for their children, so why can't we, as HIS children, hold God accountable for not giving us the best lives possible? Isn't it more likely that if their is a God, he is an egotistical child with mood swings and a terrible attitude towards humans? A greedy being who wanted sacrifice after sacrifice in the old testament, and then, after forcing Jesus to die on the cross, just stopped talking to his Children on Earth? Seriously, what gives? God does not exist in the way Christians think he does. If God truly wanted to help Christians, wouldn't he help dissolve other religions that don't believe in him and commit terror acts in another Gods name? Or maybe, their is one God of all religions, and he just doesn't care about us. We are an ant farm to him. And he does NOT deserve our worship based on him being so indifferent towards us. Also, Adam and Eve, isn't even taken seriously by most Christians. It's thought of more as a story than an actual event. Unless of course, God was cool with incest back then, and just decided afterwards that it be a bad thing. Were there any birth defected incest babies back then? And where did the dinosaurs come from?

Babies who die go to heaven. God will not usurp anyone's free will but the innocent are not in sin. The blessings of bringing a child into the world far outweigh the dangers. When a child is born with birth defects the parents are in the same place they would be if the child were to grow up and have a horrible accident that meant years of pain and financial difficulties. A child is a marvel and a witness to behold in that in pain and suffering he or she is resilient and if taught about God's love will respond with incomprehensible acceptance of it.

Should God be blamed for the horrible birth defects suffered by innocent little newborn babies?

Nope!

Instead of blaming God, why don't we ask ourselves: why are these things happening. Lets see: the use of poisons in our environment for one. We are doing all these things to ourselves not God. Once upon a time we could drink from rivers and lakes.
Once upon a time we could eat a chicken which was not pumped with steroids.

No. Defects are a consequence of sin (that Adam brought to us) as well as sickness, pain, old age and death.

If it comes from God he would not have warned Adam not to eat the fruit. No parent would like their child to be scalded with a hot iron, so the parent warns them not to touch it not even get near it...

First off, who says they are innocent?
We are all sinners by birth.
Psalms 51:5
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
Psalms 58:3
The wicked are estranged from the womb; These who speak lies go astray from birth.
Ephesians 2:3
... indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

Why blame God for the natural results of our own sin?

There is a way out of the sin:
1 John 1:5-10
5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

But there will still be sinners in the world, and you, and the innocent, may well suffer from the effects of their sins. I have seen this countless times in my own life.
