Is this practice still used to clean the dead tissue within a wound in order to promote healing.
I read earlier, that hospitals have there own, breed on site.

They are now rarely used, but is still out there. The maggots are grown with a sterile process in a laboratory to ensure absolute cleanliness. Maggot therapy can be very beneficial to burn victims. Leaches are also still used. Check out the web site listed below.

that would be correct and it is usually to treat dead tissue issues with burn patients.
