I have a lovely male kitty that I rescued when he was four years old. That was about a year ago and this little guy loves my italian leather chair. He has put some tiny little holes in the side......just noticed them a few days ago. Declawing him is not an option because both he and my female are indoor/outdoor kitties. (and actually he needs those claws to protect against my rather aloof female ; ) who still hisses at him when they are within a foot of each other) Anyhow, what can I do to keep this kitty from clawing. He knows he's not supposed to do it judging by the way he reacts when he gets caught. Please don't say water gun. I know that would work but kitty is MUCH to sneaky. I'd have to keep a water gun in a holster on my hip at all times to catch him. Imagine this scenario.... see kitty scratching, run for water gun, return to spray kitty, kitty is in next county. HELP???

I should add that the scratching post we have is sitting right next to the chair. ; (

Have you tried a cat scratching pole?
They also make these corrigated paper boards for cats to scratch on also. I have several of them around the house for my cats and they like those better than the carpeted pole.
here's a link for them and they aren't expensive at all

Hi there...a cat instintively needs to claw to help shed the nail sheaths so having multiple scratching posts/mats around will be very helpful so consider adding a few more to help give plenty of options. Some cats are horizontal scratchers and others vertical.
Here's an instructional video by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for Feline Health on how to trim a cat's nails regularly: http://www.felinevideos.vet.cornell.edu/trimming_claws/full_movie.shtml
After trimming the claws a glue-on plastic nail cover called SoftPaws can be applied to soften the trimmed nails even more: http://www.softpaws.com

You need to train your kitty to use the scratching post. When the kitty starts to scratch anything else, calmly pick up the kitty and put her paws on the scratching post and praise her alot.
Put some catnip on the scratching post to make it irresistable. Any time you see her use it make sure to praise her and make a big deal of it. Even go as far as giving her some treats when she does it.
Be persistent and she will soon catch on and the scratching post will be her favorite place to scratch.

You may want to try catnip. Buy a little bag or tub of it at a pet store, and rub it into the scratching post's carpet-like stuff. This will make the post more attractive to your kitten, and maybe encourage him to use it because as he scratches, little flakes of catnip will fall out and smell good. This worked for my grandma's cat. Good luck!

I know what you mean you grab the water and the cat is gone. You coould try getting him a scratching post to use, my cat ruined the back of our couch so we got him one and all three of our cats use it. I think it makes them feel good to, they use it to stretch. If you can you could get a cat tower to give him another place to lay and use his claws to clime on. my cats love it they clime right up and hang all over it. :)
