My dog is constantly swinging around to sniff and lick his butt. This isn't a gag question, this is serious! There is also a smell that comes out of his butt (it's not fart, it's like a musky smell). I know for a fact this is where it is coming from (I tested it, don't ask). Anyways, I'll be sitting on the couch watching t.v., and he'll come and lay down beside the couch, and then all the sudden there is this fishy, musky smell, and he's licking his butt! Next, he starts licking the carpet where he must've smelt it all up with his stinky butt. Is this normal? I've heard of having to get the anal glands squeezed or something, does this have anything to do with it? He's going #2 fine. He is a lab/border collie/pitbull, approx. 10 mos. Neutered, all shots up to date, just stinky bumb. HELP!!!

Yup, it sounds like you or more appropriately the dog has clogged anal sacs and either you or the vet is going to have to do something.

First lift the dog's tail and look on either side of him rectum. If you put pressure on either side (I cover the area with a klenex first, it is not something to spray in your face) you will see a liquid come out onto the cloth. Make sure there is no blood or pus and then try to get it all out. Then be ready all the dogs that I have done this to once need to have it again in their lifetime.

If there is blood or pus take fido straight to the vet, he has an infection. If not have fun with the responsiblities of dog ownership.

It is definitely his anal glands. He will need to get them expressed, at least once and possibly periodically. One of my dogs has the same problem and hers eventually (after about 5 or 6 years of the same problem and regularly expressing them) had to have them removed. The vet can show you how to do it on your own so that you can do it more frequently or closer to the time that you identify a problem (rather than waiting to take him to the vet), which may help alleviate the possibility of them becoming infected. My dog just had hers out about 4 months ago and she was fine within a few days - no more problem with stinky butts or oozing puss or watching her lick her butt every hour.

A larger dog such as yours shouldn't need his anal glands expressed (squeezed) however, sometimes the glands can become impacted and require a vet visit to have them cleaned. This is because they are located farther up internally than a smaller breed like a shih tzu. I know because I work as a groomer for a living.

He may be expressing his anal glands. There is not alot you can do about it. He is licking to clean himself off. This is normal for dogs. Some do it more than others. It is a natural way for them to mark their territory, even neutered dogs will do. So do females.
If he is having problems with his anal gland, you may need to see a vet. They can express them for him and clean him up afterwards. Some dogs do have medical problems with anal glands, again, your vet can help.

These are anal glands that are expressing, which is where the smell is coming from. Call your vet and ask them to do an exam. They may need expressing from the vet, but if not, at least the vet has looked at them and can tell you if all is normal. Good luck!

He does need to get his anal glands drained. The vet can do this for you. I had to do this once on my Chihuahua a couple of years ago, but have never had another problem with it. Some breeds prone to having this issue, but I don't believe yours is one so hopefully it will be a one time thing. It mught just be cloggged or something.

I would see your vet! It's true about having their anal glands squeezed. My Uncle owned a Chesapeke Bay Retriever, and it was the same thing. It gets worse as they get older, and you have to get their glands squeezed all the time, as it is only temporary. Good luck!

It's probably anal glands. Take him to the vet and they can express them for you. Lots dogs have this problem.

He can just smell his butt just for the hell of it. But you should see a vet and you also have to express his anal glands regulary and they smell worse then poo lol.
