I have always heard that you should keep them seven years; these days, though, I think I'd keep them at LEAST ten.

you re suppose to retain any financial records for at least 5 years to 7 years

Depending on your specific situation, the IRS link below recommends between 3 years and INDEFINITELY (aka forever). I personal recommend as long as you can find storage space.
