If school uniforms were assigned it would help get rid of the whole "popularity and cool" issue. A lot of popularity today, especially with teens is based entirely too much on the clothes one wears. If everyone wore the same, then people would be popular more for who they were than what they wore. Also, it would help decrease the disparity between people of lower income familis and the rest. Some families just can't afford Abercrombie and American Eagle (with their expensive prices!) and then the child feels bad about it. If there was a school uniform, then these children wouldn't feel bad about it.

School uniforms differ from school to school - at my grade school, you had to wear blue pants and a white polo shirt, had to have your socks 1" above your ankle (or the teachers would get out the ruler!), (for girls) jumpers had to come down to the tips of your finger if you put you hands flat against your sides, your shoes had to be ALL white or ALL black (not even a silver Nike swish), and finally you always had to have your shirt tucked in and all that. it was so gay.
At my high school, you can wear any collard shirt, any tie (but you have to wear one), and any color pants, just not jeans or jean material. Oh, and you have to wear some kind of dress shoes (that means basically a shoe that is brown or black and does not look like a tennis shoe).
So yeah, there's a big difference. I absolutely hated my grade school's uniform (i always got conduct points for my socks being too low). I don't really mind my high school uniform, though it is nice to sit in jeans and my led zeppelin t-shirt.
I couldn't believe that someone said girls can't wear the same outfit in a month?!?! thats rediculous! god, i sometimes will wear the same jeans/t-shirt combo 3 times a week, and i'm perfectly fine with it (ahhhhh...its great to be a guy).

In theory school uniforms are supposed to get rid of cliques, eliminate gang related activities, and make it easier for students to study by reducing distractions.
It is supposed to make it easier for poor kids to have clothes. I would assume that it would also slightly eliminate cliques in school, but not completely. It doesn't seem as effective as people think. I would know because even though there are school administrators, when they are not looking people will make their pants sag, and then pull them up when they see a teacher. Same for cliques. All they would have to do is make a "sign" or a hairstyle, or wear a clothes brand, and that still makes cliques.

Well, a lot of peer pressure to wear certain clothes.
Your parents will save some money on school clothes.
There will be fewer cliques because everyone is dressing the same ergo broader acceptance of others.
I'm sure there's more.

It would help nicely portraying a uniform appearance as they goose-step proudly through Red Square.
I like military and paramilitary organizations to be uniformed but not school kids.

school uniforms would help people from getting picked on because of their clothes; it would also help reduce dress code violations due to showing too much skin, and it would make people (supposedly) concentrate more on their work b/c they don't have to worry about what everybody else is wearing.
personally, i think people would start doing their hair crazy or SOMETHING to make themselves more unique than the uniforms would allow. i kind of think school uniforms would be a good idea, though...

There are alot of issues on that topic, I personally don't like school uniforms but one good thing that might come out of it is that it can eliminate alot of teasing and name calling around the school on students clothes.

Poor kids (and kids with no taste) sometimes get picked on because of the clothes they wear. It also addresses issues that administrators have about gang colors, etc.

I am all for uniforms...i wish my public school had them. Less time getting ready in the morning is one big thing. Spending less money on clothes is another thing. both these reasons are more for girls. girls can't really repeat outfits in the month. Also less cliches. no goth/punk/ghetto gangsta/prep kids. The first reason is my favorite tho.

It doesn't really do anything except rid the children of their identities and increase the odds that they will become sheep, incapable of thinking for themselves or saying "no" and walking away.
It's just a control maneuver.
