Anything new that comes in to my house he will run and tag it. Sometimes even in front of me. If I have nothing new for him to mark he will go after my plastic trash cans in the kitchen. If I block that then he goes after my curtains, ottoman, etc... But mostly loves plastic! He is an inside and outside dog.

Since he is already 5, he's probably already engrained in his brain that it's okay to mark, and the bad habit would probably be hard to stop. Fortunately, there are still things you can do, for example giving the poor fellow more attention.

An interesting thing I learned, is that your dog may not know what he is doing is bad, because in his brain he is thinking of protecting you. He might be marking the surroundings, because he doesn't want other dogs to take control of you.

I have the exact same problem with my little Jack, and after giving him more attention he is starting to be better. I'm going to try this plug-in air disfusser that supposedly works.

If he's marking at 5, he's probably not neutered - The solution speaks for itself!

Have him neutered. That is supposed to help. My boy Shih Tzu is getting neutered tomorrow.

If he is not neutered, get him neutered. It reduces marking a lot.

hi,

is he neutered or crate trained? if not I highly recommend it.

if he is, and he is still doing it, i would try enrolling him in obedience classes.
