Some of the answers I've read so far (not all... just some) are absolutely ridiculous.

First off, 101.5 isn't abnormally high for common infections, such as influenza, which is a possible cause of your b/f's illness, particularly this time of year. It's far from anything that's going to cause harm.

So no - the fever itself is not presenting a danger. But I (nor anyone that answers this question) can't presume to know the cause of your b/f's illness. More than likely, it's the flu, or some other transient illness. But it could be something different - something worse. It's up to you to make the call on when, or if, to seek medical advice. The symptoms you mention are non-specific, and are common to illnesses ranging from the common cold to problems much, much worse. Statistically speaking, however, odds are high this isn't cause for undue concern, assuming your b/f is in good health and doesn't have any issues with his immune system.

Personally speaking (only what I'd do - not what I necessarily suggest!), I'd wait it out for a while, get plenty of fluids into him, try to keep him eating regularly (even if he doesn't feel like it), let him rest as much as possible, keep a written log of his symptoms, and of his temperature (maybe take it every 4 hours or so while awake.) If his condition continues to worsen, if his fever reaches and exceeds 103, if he has any red lines running along the course of his lymph system (insides of arms, legs, armpits, sides of neck, etc, or if he developes other differentiating symptoms not consistent with the flu... then I'd seek medical attention. If it is (more than likely) minor, you'll be doing all you can, and if it isn't... you'll have collected plenty of valuable info for the doctors to use.

As for some of the 'questionable' comments I've read on this...

"Take him to the hospital now or to the morque tomorrow"... ludicrous.

"A fever is the body's way of cooling itself down" (I'm having a hard time typing I'm laughing so hard over this one).... wrong, wrong, wrong.

"A fever this high can cause brain damage"... brain damage may be caused by a fever---- if it's in the 107 degree range.

"strip him down and cool him"... a fever is one of your body's methods of fighting infections. It helps promote immune system response, and also inhibits the reproduction of some disease-causing organisms. Assuming the fever doesn't get out of control, it's often better to let it run its course. For this reason, I also don't think tylenol or aspirin are the best choices if you can stand to avoid them. Yes, they're commonly prescribed, but only to make the patient feel better, not to shorten the course of the illness.

It sounds like a normal case of the flu to me. I've had significantly higher fevers than that with the flu, with no lasting damage. :) Tylenol is probably the safest way to reduce the fever.

Make sure he gets extra sleep, drinks extra water (or soup, or juice, or anything with no caffeine), and doesn't go to work or do anything strenuous.

Also, echinacea supplements can help reduce the length of time a person is sick with a virus. (It has been PROVEN to increase the body's production of certain types of white blood cells that hunt and/or kill invading viruses). Vitamin C supplements are also good for overall health and immune system boosting.

If his fever doesn't go down in a day or two, however, he should see a doctor. He might have a bacterial infection.

A fever is the body's natural reaction to cooling itself down by causing him to sweat. It is not high enough to have to go to the hospital. He could take some Tylenol and that should bring his fever down and drink plenty of fluids. If he is coughing up green-ish colored mucous then he has an infection that may need antibiotics.
It could be the start of the flu so make sure he gets some rest and sees a doctor if he feels worse.

I work at a local ER...The fever shouldn't be the only deciding factor in taking him to the hospital. Did you give him something for his fever? What are his symptoms? Is he taking in and putting out fluids? If he isn't going to the bathroom then you probably need to get some fluids in him. If he is having abdominal pain or back pain with this fever, I'd also take him in. If it's just cold symptoms with a fever, then treat the fever and rest, call the family doctor in the am. If you feel it can't wait, DON'T sit at home and think about it. Just take him in. Thats what we are here for!
Good Luck!

101.5 is a fever but if it gets higher than I would start to worry. I believe a fever is a sign of an infection of some sort. I would see how he feels in a day or two depending on how fast it progresses, if it does.

Take note: Men are big babies when they are sick so pamper him a little and you'd be amazed at how quick he gets better!

Unless any of us are doctors, we shouldn't be answering this question.

However, how old is your boyfriend? If you are teens a 101.5 temp is probably not a big deal. As you get older the degrees start to mean more.

I would give him aspirin, or tylenol to reduce the fever, make sure he gets plenty of rest and drinks lots of fluids and wait a couple of days. If the fever goes higher at any time or he starts showing other symptoms, he needs to see a doctor right away.

It would not be outrageous or out of the question to make an appointment now to see a doctor, but I bet his answer is aspirin, bed rest and fluids....

The flow chart at the site below might be of some use to you....

the terrific concern to do is write a letter to the scientific institution administrator outlining each thing that befell. risk is they had emergencies and your sister became considered non-emergent so she had to attend it out. Its particularly uncomplicated prepare for nurses to "triage" and then positioned sufferers so as in accordance to the scientific choose. I had a no longer so super birthing adventure at a scientific institution, and suggested it. no longer something incredibly befell to every person, and thanks to the healthcare expert i circulate to would be applying an identical scientific institution this being pregnant besides. If she is rather unhappy with the scientific institution, perhaps she would be able to apply yet another particularly.

You can call your urgent care center or walk in clinic...It isn't really bad enough for the hospital they will just do the same thing...give him tylenol a cool bath and lots of sleep and love....you can also call a pharmacist if you feel like you need something other than tylenol...its going around so wash your hands lots or youll be next to get it.

A 101 fever is not that bad, give him some tylenol and a cool rag to put on his head and have him rest, he will be fine, the flu is going around now.
