As others have written, you will need the usual things-food/water bowls, food, crate, leash, collar, chew toy (definate for "terrier teeth"), and the most important - TIME. Get to know his personality and you will learn what he needs. Terriers are HIGH ENERGY companions and Westies still have a lot of hunting instinct. Until you have had loads of time together make sure you don't leave him alone with small children, cats and kittens, or any other small pets you have. My little fellow gets along great with our two tabby boys but has cleared our yard of squirrels and birds.

As you learn his habits the most important thing to learn first is how to wear him out. Believe me, while that ball of energy can be great fun at two in the afternoon, it is quite the opposite at two in the morning! Learn a variety of ways to wear him out and you will both be happier. One of the great things about little Westies is that, like small children, they will literally play until they pass out. My boy would run and run and run and then sleeeeepppp!

Good luck with your new friend and try not to fall over laughing the first time he "kills" a stuffed toy-the head shaking is hilarious!

Besides the usual food, dishes, toys, collar and leash, you should think about a crate, a good book on Westies, grooming supplies (get her use to being groomed, later she will need it), and the phone number for good 24 hr vet clinic.
Plan on having some time to spend with her the first few days. Do not pick her up, knowing you only have a short time before you need a goodnight sleep, to get up and quickly leave for work for the next day. Have the first day be early in the morning. Spend the day with her. Know that you will not get a goodnight sleep for a few nights. Try to be able to spend at least two full days with her. If you can, go home for lunch, or have a friend or family member check on her during the day you are at work.

Good luck with you new companion.
