What you are describing is called disability insurance. Disability just means you have a medical condition or treatment that will cause you to be unable to perform your regular work duties on a temporary or long term basis. Many employers offer disability insurance. The other option would be social security disability, but qualifying can be difficult.
Check with your employer, and you should be protected under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act of 1993). What this means is when you mantain proper documentation from your physician about your condition, you can take an unpaid, (or go on disability pay if applicable) leave of absence. Once and only when the doctor releases you to return to work, you will be guaranteed a job at the same rate of pay you were earning before your surgery/disability.
To receive compensation while disabled, you do have to have some form of disability insurance through a private company or your employer. Check with your employer, you will need to provide documentation that you have had surgery anyhow. Since this was an emergency procedure, show documentation to your employer as soon as possible.
Also note: health insurance does not pay for time out of work. Health insurance only covers the insurance company's portion of medical expenses from treatment from a doctor or other healthcare professional.
