Can you run for President of USA if your not in politics? Do you have to have a back round in it or can you come out of the blue? I personally believe that anyone can do a better job than who we have now. I know we have like 8 people that are runnin in 2008, what are your takes on them?

Technically, the only requirements to be president is you have to be a native-born citizen (cannot be an immigrant that became naturalized), at least 35 years old, and have lived in the US for at least the last 10 years. However, with the costs of running a campaign being in the millions, you need financial backing. Also, the two parties (Democrat and Republican) pretty much have a lock on votes. The last independent who had a decent chance of running was Ross Perot, and he was still a distant third in votes compared to the Democratic and Republican candidate.

There are basic requirements to run for president, such as being at least 35 and being a natural-born citizen, having been a US resident for at least 14 years, and not having already been president for more than six years.

A person who meets those qualifications also has requirements to meet to get on the ballot. Each state has its own requirements for its ballot. Most states allow write-ins, but that's not very practical for a major office since it would be almost impossible to get enough votes to be elected - it can work for small local offices.

jseah114 gave the technical requirements. I just wanted to add, if you are running for ANY office, you ARE in politics.

Note: This is the Tax area. Yahoo Answer has a Politics category. This question should be there.

Yes and not really.

People need to get their name out there in order to collect enough votes. Its about appearance mostly.
