" A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess of the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence:from bondage to spiritual faith;from spiritual faith to great courage;from courage to liberty;from liberty to abundance;from abundance to selfishness;from selfishness to complacency;from complacency to apathy;from apathy to dependency;from dependency back again to bondage.

Can you name anything that lasts forever?

Democracy will last forever as long good men confront evil. That means having the guts to fight and win wars, especially this one in Iraq.

"It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it."
--- General Douglas MacArthur

In war there is no prize for the runner-up.
---- General Omar Bradley

For example, as long as we have men like United States Marines to defend our democracy, then it will last forever.

Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines.
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918

My only answer as to why the Marines get the toughest jobs is because the average Leatherneck is a much better fighter. He has far more guts, courage, and better officers... These boys out here have a pride in the Marine Corps and will fight to the end no matter what the cost.
2nd Lt. Richard C. Kennard, Peleliu, World War II

There was always talk of espirit de corps, of being gung ho, and that must have been a part of it. Better, tougher training, more marksmanship on the firing range, the instant obedience to orders seared into men in boot camp.
James Brady, columnist, novelist,
press secretary to President Reagan, television personality and
Marine

The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, 'The elite of this country.' I think it is the elite of the world.
Admiral William Halsey, U.S. Navy

The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.
General Mark Clark, U.S. Army

Bottom line, the good men will eventually refuse to fund the undeserved.

In theory true, but in fact you do not have a pure democracy, the country is ruled by the elite regardless of what you call the kind of governement. So...your whole premise if flawed. By the way, the idea you state is probably over 500 years old, not exactly a new thought.

Maybe next time we'll have shorter term limits and for all government officals... Stagnant ideas help to bring down a country and no better way to get them then to let the same people rule for too long. Hopefuly the earth doesnt explode in time for us to start over.

That sounds like what the Roman Empire went through, and we may be going through! They also got too big for their britches and could not control the lands they conquered! Sound familiar.

We are not a democracy, and their are very few, if any, true democracies in the world.

Because there will always be social unrest. People like change which is the exact reason the United States has underlined that nobody can be President for more than 8 years (2 terms).

You are very accurate.

We have been programed for years to have our hands out for "free" money from the government.

"Gimme. Let the taxpayer pick up the tab".
Thank you for a great question.

Because the masses don't always no what is best for them, and when electing officials, they tend to select the ones that give them the most gain, and then corrupt people take control and begin to bring down the system
