We've been feeding our little baby Iams, but ive done some research and now I am horrified. I just cant believe some of the things in Iams and I cant believe how they treat animals just to find "good nutrition"

By doing some research I found Natural Balance, I was thinking about switching to this, it seemed great.

Im looking for something on the organic side, something thats actually good for my baby. I love her more than anything and I only want the best for her. I also want a brand that doesnt do cruel things to animals.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Here's the 2006 list from the Whole Dog Journal. These are highest quality foods. Most of these are not carried at large chain stores but you can usually find them at small pet stores, feed and grain stores, etc.

Foods such as Alpo, Purina Dog Chow, IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree,Science Diet, Beneful are low quality. They are loaded with cheap fillers & by products and some even contain dyes and chemical preservatives. Corn, Wheat & soy are common allergens. Corn and soy are implicated in recent studies to be the cause of unexplained seizures in dogs, beet pulp adds no nutrition only unnecassary sugars. A dog is designed to eat meat, to process meat proteins not veggie/grain. It takes up to 3 times more of a grain based food for a dog to receive proper nutrition then it does a good quality meat based food.

Some good foods to consider; Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Canidae, Innova, Solid Gold, Percise, premium Edge, Timberwolf just ot name a few

There are many good dog foods out there. Purina, Pedigree, and even Science Diet (which you get from the vet) are all bad foods. The reason for this is because of the ingredients. The first three ingredients should be two meats (or a meat and a meat meal).

Here are the first three ingredients in Science Diet puppy food: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Soybean Meal (directly from their website)

Corn and soy are two of the top causes for digestive issues in dogs with sensitive stomachs. Also, soy can cause dogs to have terrible gas!

Wellness a high quality dog food, for example has deboned chicken, chicken meal, and oatmeal as the first three ingredients in their puppy food. See the difference?

Look at the ingredients and you will be able to fine a good food for your dog.

I feed my dogs Eagle Pack holistic select. I also like Solid Gold Wolf King and Wolf Cub.

Canidae and Natural Balance are also good foods, so find a store that has samples of any or all of these, and see which your dogs like. In my case with a Great Dane, I also see which food reduces his gas!

You are in a boat with a lot of other people at this time. Pick up a book by Anne N. Martin called "Foods Pets Die For". You will be totally shocked! I have been working with K-9 for over 30 years and in the past 4 years have really been into nutrician, not only for me but for my K-9's. People who buy food off the shelf have NO IDEA what they are feeding their pets!!! Have you ever read the label on Vienna Sausages??? Meat by products???? They serve this up to humans!!! You are eating pig lip just to mention one item that can be considered as "meat by product"!
I would need to know your breed of dog and the exercise level that you put into his envirnment in order to guide you completely. I will tell you that foods purchased in the basic grocery store and most pet stores all fall into the "GEE I wonder what that is in this food" catagory! We all need RED/GREEN die in our diet! There are some very good, organic foods out there, but you will not find them in Walmart or Petsmart. You need to go to a pet specialty store or order them yourself. They are very exspensive so most people do not buy them. I am not saying that you can not have a happy dog on a few of these foods, but there is much better servings than what most people are serving UP>
I am a canine trainer and own working dogs. My dogs are very active (some are hybrids). I train search and rescure, obedience and detection. I need my guys on a very high protien and fat diet to maintain the level of energy they expend on a daily basis. You can feed the same, however the fat content for an inactive dog would surely put on way to much weight.
I will list for you some really good foods, hard to find, but if you call they will send you the info. Some have sites. Please understand that some of this is the very contriversal "raw"diet.
Primal pet foods...primalpetfooeds.com............
Oma's Prinde........omaspride.com...........
Northwest Naturals.....naturals.com
I use these mixed in with some Kibble. I use a food called Innova or EVO(evolutionary diet). For my working dogs this is good.
42% Protein...22%Fat.....it also has Omega -3 and many Vitamins. AGAIN...this diet would not work for a couch potatoe!
I also am fond of MONZIE"S... This is a total organic Muesli for dogs. Made with HUMAN grade organic ingredients (nuts, herbs, veggies, NO wheat NO corn. ( when ever you seen "corn or wheat" on the list of ingredients, stay away!!) It is recommended by holistic vets and nutritionists. With this I add my own meat, water and fresh veggies and it becomes MY own dog food.
I mix this 1/2 and 1/2 . Innova and the Muesli diet.
Now if you have a dog that is not a working dog you can Doctor it to suit your own dog's routine.
After becoming educated in the foods that are on the shelf.....I would never give my dog that crap again. ALSO... you will probably hear a lot of negative feedback on the raw diet. Do your own research as to where it is coming from. There are many people out there that stand to loose a lot of money if all of a sudden everyone goes organic and raw!!!
I hope this was helpful for you. I do not treat my dogs as my children, as they are DOGS. I love them dearly and they are 90% of my life and if I would not eat it, I am surley not going to feed it to my dogs!!!

PS...IAMS and EUK diets are full of sugar(which usually gives young pups very loose stool)!!! If you have to buy a commerical food off the rack....go for something w/o corn/wheat or products which are labeled additives with no explanation... and NO sugar!!!

I use Nutro. You can learn more about it at www.nutroproducts.com. I also like Wellness. It is a very good product (a little pricey for me since I have 5 dogs). It is made by Old Mother Hubbard: http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com

Read what the food contains on the bag. Get the best, you pay for names on lots of foods. The dog in real life eats what they can. I don't use Ol'Roy was told by vet it wasn't good, just cheap, but who knows we believe any thing we read or hear!!

Try Blue. Follow the link--it's great food! People actually comment about how shiny my dogs' coats are since I started feeding them this product.
