I have an SUV, which is all wheel drive and I always go slow when the weather is bad. a lot of the people here the North West are so stupid when it comes to driving in bad weather. It drives me crazy. They go way to fast and are talking on their cell phones not paying attention. We had over 200 accidents 3 days ago because of people thinking they would be okay traveling at the normal rate of speed. Does this irritate you?

Well, lets just say this, I make a lot of money in the winter pulling people out of ditches, because they think that their 4WD SUV is invensible. Slow down, and drive responsibly. If the conditions are so bad that your vehicle is in 4WD, then you shouldn't be driving very fast in the first place. 4WD will get you going but it doesn't help you stop.

I live in Idaho, and know what you mean. People for some reason think that they can drive 65-70MPH on snow and ice. Well guess what I end up pulling you out of the ditch.

I drive a 4WD Jeep, a full size truck and a car. I drive all 3 the same way in snow and ice. Very cautiously. Its better to drive slowly, get to work late if you have to than it is to have to repair or replace your car. I very seldom even use 4WD, as I find that its just easier to know how to drive without having to rely on the 4WD.

If you are one of the people that drive's extremely slow in bad weather I salute you, and you should tell others to follow your lead.

The cars that pass me on the highways are the ones that I end up having to pull out of the ditch.

Yes, I am a truckdriver based in the Seattle/Auburn area. I have noticed from past experiences the people with SUVs are usually the first ones to roll over in a snow/ice storm. I think they feel that there invincible to normal cars and the drive them like there sport cars. However they fail to realize that their center of gravity sits about 2 to 3 feet higher off the ground which makes them prone to rollovers from fast swerving manuevers such as sliding in the snow or quick lane changes. I commend you that you drive slow during these conditions as all motorists should.

Uh... yes.

The faster you go, then the faster your car will be going when it starts to skid across the ice. You will have no control regardless of the speed (until you hit something you can grip), so would you rather go into a spin and possibly hit someone or something at 30 or 60 mph??

If you have a 4wd SUV (not all SUV's have this), you can put it into one of the gears for driving on ice, but you will definitely have to go slower then.

You should always take precaution when the weather is poor or bad, even more so if you are driving an SUV. It is good that you have 4X4 capability but this only improves your traction on the road.

YES - just because you have 4 wheel drive does not mean you can't still hit ice and slide all over or not stop in time. 4 wheel drive just helps with traction. You still have to drive for the road conditions.

Irritate me? Not anymore. Except when the State Police decided to kick those idiots off the Interstate, where they were moving at 20-25 mph, onto the secondary road where we HAD been moving at 40-50 mph. Until the idiots arrived.

SUV are a great vehicle for bad weather. You can get better traction however they still stop / slide like any other vehicle. The only thing you have to remember is slow & steady is always safer in the bad weather. Good luck and happy / safe motoring.
P.S. Please always remember your directionals, Thanks.

Many people who own SUVs think they are invincible and their vehicle will overcome the laws of physics.

Physics wins every time.

There are a lot of stupid drivers huh. Of course you would go slower. I guess some people don't think ice is slick.

You have more forward momentum, and since 4 wheel drive doesnt stop you any faster, you have to go slower.
