I have a doberman and he has very high energy, but the only thing that keeps him full, and satisfied is purina. but i dont know, is it the right thing to buy? If not why? and a good reason too please!
Also i have tried all the other brands, and thats is all he likes to eat, and if not he will get skinny becuase he really dosent like the food. and i do get doggie food recipes from online vets, and its really good wholesome food, so its not like he dosent ever get really good food. And its all home cooked, and healthy. I make it about 2, to 3 times a week. But still, i want him to have a good staple food. please help.

Purina is a decent brand. If he's happy and your happy its fine. It does take dogs time to adjust to new food if you want to change. Try adding 1/4 cup of new food to his regular food everyday. Graduall increase the amount of new food over several weeks. He will make the shift easier. If you think he needs to gain weight because he is so active you would need to switch to a higher protein dog food. Most of the "grocery store brands" are all made by the same company under different labels. I would stay clear of the generic and most grocery store brands (ol Roy,-walmart, gravy train, kibbles and bits etc). It contains a lot of filler and not enough protein. You can tell by watching your dogs stools. They become very loose on grocery store brands and loose weight and eat more dog food than recommended. On a good dog food the dog will have firm solid stools. The brands that have a very good reputation and considered designer dog food is Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet etc. But of course they are quite expensive, but the dogs eat less of it. A high energy dog should have a food around 26-27%protein. Check the label for this information and the first ingredient should not be a filler or binder such as cracked corn or flour. The first ingredient on the label should offer a protein source. Purinas puppy food is the best in its line of products. Diamond Dog food is a good moderately priced dog food. Dont feel bad buying purina, i buy the purina puppy chow for my dogs. Go by what your dog is telling you.

It's based on opinion. My boyfriend family feeds their Boxer Purina and he's doing good. He's healthy and living a good long life. My dog does not eat Purina, she used to, but I had to stop because she was not digesting the food. She was having a lot of Diarrhea.
I switched her food to Nutro Ultra dry dog food and Nutro pouched food for puppies. I have no problem. She is asorbing the food quite well.
If you want to know that you are feeding your dog good dry dog food then you should look at the ingredients in the food. The top ingredients should be meat prodcuts (not by products) and the last ingridient should be corn ( any type of corn prodcut is a filler and dogs do not digest it). If you can purchase a product without corn in the ingridents then that will be good too.
As long as your dog is asorbing the food well, healthy, and doing good then there's no worry. Good Luck.

If it is a higher quality Purina product (like Purina ONE or Pro Plan) than it is fine. I would not recommend any of the other Purina products. I have my dogs on it (Purina ONE Natural Blends and Pro Plan Selects) and I really like it. Plus, almost everyone that I know that shows dogs uses Purina. They have nice firm small stools, and the have very nice coats (and I haven't had to deal with any skin problems). My picky eater loves Pro Plan Selects Turkey formula, and it is the only food that I have found that he will eat consistently (and he will actually beg for it).
My veterinarian recommends the higher quality Purina products for people who do not like Science Diet (which is horrible).

Read the label on dog food and get the best food. I personnally believe dry is better. Dogs in the wild do not eat things cooked. More power to ya! Most things are made so us human will buy them!

A lot of dog foods contain high amounts of grains which aren't good. When you look at dog food, look at the first 3 ingredients listed, those are the biggest majority of what is in the food. I feed my Labs ProPlan because it's main ingredient is Lamb.

It's not the best food out there, but it's what I feed my dogs. I just throw extra supplements in their food. If you are looking for a premium dog food, i recommend Science Diet or Nutro. They have no fillers like Purina does and no byproducts either.

Doberman are high energy dogs, and your food would probably need to be high in protein to keep him satisfied, try Buddy Boy High Energy it comes in a yellow bag and it is 24% protein and 20% fat. Also try and make sure he has plenty of exercises since he is such a high energy dog.

Purina is about as bad as it gets - Full of corn fillers. The #1 ingredient of food that he eats should be MEAT, not CORN or GRAIN.
If you insist that it's all he will eat (Trust me, the dog will eat other foods when he's hungry!), make sure you give him a supplement in addition to the food.
