I am a Hedgehog owner, I also own 2 cats and 2 dogs. They are in constant contact with each other and they have never exchanged fleas.

Hedgehogs typically don't carry fleas... ( but I am sure there are some that do) Simply because the Hedgies skin and quills don't make a good habitat for fleas. Mainly because some hedgehogs are so small that there is not enough "space" for the flea, and their eggs and the larva.

However Hedgies are famous for getting mites. My hedgie required regular treatment for mites on her skin. This came from her trips into the grass during the summer (as she was indoors the rest of the year).

Most likely if they are fleas they are coming from the grass and other areas. Also, fleas can live for quite a while with out a host. You could have gone to a friends house who had a cat who had fleas and brought them home on your shoes...

I would suggest a vet check up this is the only way you will know if you are dealing with fleas, mites or ticks. The will then be able to help you treat the problem with topical medication like Advantage, frontline or revolution

good luck

According to Crash, the UK hedgehog hospital, hedgehog fleas might move onto dogs but don't stay there for long. Cat and dog fleas, however, can be picked up in long grass frequented by other pets. Your best bet would be to consult your vet about a course of Frontline flea treatment... and remember to spray your household fabrics with a recommended treatment too, or the eggs will develop and jump back on to your poor little Yorkie.

Whatever you do, don't use household preparations on your dog and do take expert advice. Modern treatments are very strong and Yorkies are very small and vulnerable to too many toxins. Give him a hug from me and my 2 mutts!

As some people say on here, YES hedgehogs do carry fleas!

BUT! It MUST be noted that although hedgehogs carry fleas, these are non-transmittable to other animals.
That means that even if the Hedgehog does have fleas, that is where they are going to stay!

Hedgehog fleas live on Hedgehogs. As simple as that, so its important not to go pinning the blame on the hedgehog!

yes, hedgehog are lovely animals but they do carry flees and mites. Your dog can caught them from going out side onto the grass. Its not a case that she doesn't go near other dogs, flees are in the grass, fields, and yes in your garden. You should use a flee control medicine from your vet either stronghold, frontline spray or drops. These are the best two, you dont wait for your dog to get flees or mites you treat them even month to prevent them. Just the same as worming your dog, this must be done every month, depending on which one you use, milbemax is every 3 months. One you treat the dog you need to treat your house.

Hope this helps. I no its a pain but you must prevent before things get out of hand. Good luck.

Yes she could have caught them from the Hedgehog. Hedgehog fleas are much bigger than dog fleas. But the good news is, they won't stay long on your dog! Other possiblility is cat fleas - do you have any visiting cats?

Yes, fleas all belong to one family. Your dog would be bigger than a hedgehog and also his blood would be richer in nutrients compared with a small hedgehog, hence the fleas would be more inclined to liveon your dog.

i think you have fleas in the yard and if you see them on the dog you have them in the house too. You will need to treat the pet, the entire house(fleas have legs) and the yard to get rid of the problem. It is expensive and time consuming and once you've been thru it once you generally become a believer in flea prevention.

Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas - cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.
You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.
