To get into basic training, you must be able to run a mile and a half in under 13 minutes; do 30 sit-ups in 2 minutes and 30 press ups in 2 minutes. The mile and a half run is done immediately after doing 3/4 mile as a squad.
Once you have passed that, you start basic training where the physical tests are harder but you are trained in this time to become progessively more fit and able to pass the progressively harder tests.
If you do decide to join up, it is a good idea to do some training beforehand - just to get ahead of the field.

The hardest non Special Forces selection course for the British Military is the Royal Marine 32 week Commando Course.
The Army has a easy 12 week basic training which is easy peasy.

TA selection is easy.
They're more interested in your determination and character; if you don't meet a certain target, it's not much of a problem if tried your very best.
Do some 1.5 and 3 mile runs in the best time you can. Do press ups, sit ups and pull ups.
Training is done gradually; they bulid you up. They will push you, but will also help where they can.
Good luck!

I've never tried to join but the only people I know that joined up were the really stupid guys from school that weren't going to get a job anywhere else. Take from that what you will.
